Robert M. Lee
Registered Psychotherapist
Chronic pain and illness are not just physical experiences—they affect the mind, emotions, and sense of self. My approach integrates mindfulness, somatic awareness, and depth psychology to help you navigate the psychological and emotional impact of ongoing pain. We explore the mind-body connection, recognizing how stress, trauma, and unconscious patterns can shape your experience of pain. Rather than fighting your body, therapy helps you develop a compassionate, attuned relationship with it—building resilience, reducing suffering, and fostering a sense of agency in your healing process.

Can chronic pain get better?
Yes! Our brain changes and adapt throughout our lifetime (i.e., this is called neuroplasticity). Habits are essentially strengthened roads or pathways when we repeatedly do or feel or think in the same way. When we continue to travel the same road or pathway, we strengthen the habit. When we form a new habit, we make new connections and old pathways are used less/weakened. The more we travel the pathway, the more our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours become second nature (e.g., like brushing teeth).
In chronic pain, the nervous system and brain have changed due to neuroplasticity in an unhelpful way. The good news is that we all have the ability to learn and change by rewiring our brain.
Join our clinicians to participate in our 10-session Mind-Body Connection program designed to teach you strategies to manage chronic pain. Meet Laura, our awesome physiotherapist who can also provide additional strategies.
Some of our coaches have:
• Helped to start one of the largest pediatric chronic pain programs at a children’s hospital in Ontario
• Currently also at hospital chronic pain clinics
• Completed dissertation projects on chronic pain and are actively involved in ongoing research
• Hold leadership positions on regional and national chronic pain committees
• Hold academic appointments at well respected universities in which they teach and supervise trainees in the field of chronic pain
• Start psychosocial oncology programs in hospitals

Transformative Chronic Illness Therapy: Reclaim Power and Peace in Your Relationships
I’m here to guide you through a deeply healing journey if you’re struggling with the emotional and physical suffering of chronic illness. You might feel helpless, victimized, or powerless in your relationships, maybe always people-pleasing or living at the mercy of others’ emotions. I get it—these patterns can feel like they’re draining your energy and keeping you stuck. My chronic illness therapy practice is all about helping you uncover the roots of these struggles, often tied to childhood experiences, and empowering you to find balance, release control, and reclaim your inner peace.
A Trauma-Informed Path to Healing
The psychology of chronic illness often stems from early experiences, like growing up tiptoeing around a parent’s anger or emotional outbursts. That fear of being attacked or not being enough can carry into adulthood, showing up as controlling others, frequent anger, or putting people on a pedestal while feeling powerless yourself. I’ve seen how these dynamics—rooted in childhood—can weigh heavily on your health and relationships. In our work, we’ll gently explore those roots, using trauma-informed therapy to shine a light on how they’re affecting you today.
We’ll focus on healing the power struggles in your relationships, both past and present. This means learning to balance power—neither controlling nor surrendering to others—and letting go of the fear that you’re under attack. My approach is holistic and intuitive, tailored to your unique story, helping you release the need to please or depend on others for validation. Together, we’ll rebuild your sense of autonomy, so you can feel grounded and in charge of your own life.
Releasing Control and Finding Freedom
Healing chronic illness isn’t just about your body; it’s about transforming how you show up in relationships. We’ll work on letting go of control, whether it’s trying to manage others’ emotions or holding onto old fears from childhood. I’ll guide you to honour your own needs, set healthy boundaries, and release the patterns that keep you feeling powerless. This process is deeply compassionate, creating a safe space where you can feel seen and supported as you move toward wholeness.
If you’re ready to break free from these cycles and heal the emotional roots of chronic illness, I’m here to walk with you. Let’s work together to restore balance, empower your voice, and help you live with greater peace and strength. Book a consultation with me today, and let’s start this transformative journey.

Living with Chronic Pain or Illness
Chronic conditions affect more than just the body—they shape how we think, feel, relate, and move through daily life. My approach is designed to meet these challenges with depth, flexibility, and compassion.
Rather than focusing solely on symptom relief, I support a process of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and mind-body integration. Together, we explore how pain is experienced physically and emotionally, and how subconscious patterns may influence the way it’s held in the body.
My Approach Includes:
• Thoughtfully tailored support based on your unique condition, needs, and goals
• Integration of therapeutic modalities including CBT, mindfulness, psychosomatic awareness, and Gestalt principles
• Ongoing reflection and adjustment to meet what’s emerging in your process
• Attention to both physical discomfort and emotional impact—without rushing or bypassing
This work is about learning to live in relationship with your body, not in battle with it. It’s about building resilience, expanding choice, and finding new ways to move forward—one step at a time.

From a trauma-informed perspective, chronic-pain and illness are both symptomatic of unresolved trauma, both physical and mental. The work we can do will include helping you better understand your health and how your mind and body impact each other. It can include helping you learn how to better cope with your condition, while also doing the processing work to resolve your trauma. It can also include helping you develop stronger self advocacy to better navigate through the health care systems.
