When life’s pain feels overwhelming and inescapable, it is understandable that suicidal thoughts would emerge as a response as it acts as a shield of sorts. From an emotionally focused perspective, I aim to gently explore and understand the deep emotional pain that gives rise to feelings of suicide which are often rooted in profound disconnection, emotional isolation, and a sense of hopelessness. In our work together, I strive to create a safe, compassionate space where you can express your emotions openly, without fear of judgment. At the same time, we carefully examine the emotional triggers behind these thoughts - such as feelings of rejection, worthlessness, or abandonment. We will work towards a greater self-awareness of your emotional needs and vulnerabilities through the therapeutic relationship. It can also be useful to use Internal Family Systems (IFS) as it offers a compassionate framework for addressing suicidal thoughts by exploring the various parts of ourselves that may be in conflict or distress. In IFS, these thoughts often represent a part that feels overwhelmed or hopeless. Instead of judging this part, IFS encourages us to approach it with curiosity and compassion to understand its intentions. This process can also lead us to reveal protective parts shielding us from unresolved trauma. By acknowledging and integrating these parts, we can begin to reduce internal tension and ultimately help to ease the suicidal thoughts. When struggling with suicidal thoughts, it can feel like the pain will never stop, that no one will understand you, or everyone will judge you. This is a very delicate and vulnerable experience that requires a compassionate and kind attention. I offer a non-judgmental, gentle space to explore your emotions, uncover underlying struggles, and develop coping tools to navigate moments of distress. Using a solution-focused, existential, and safety-oriented approach, we will work toward building hope, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Suicidal thoughts are common in clients with various types of depression, PTSD, anxiety, psychosis, schizophrenia and substance abuse. Risk assessment using the Columbia Suicidal Severity Scale and safety planning when necessary are part of routine mental health assessment. Responding to suicidal ideation requires an understanding of what messages do those thoughts, intentions and plans want to convey. In addition to risk mitigation and crisis management, sustainability requires addressing the root causes of such mental states that get a human being to a level of suffering that they stop seeing the reasons and hopes for living.

Having suicidal thoughts can be isolating and scary at the same time. I'm here to hold a harm-reductive approach to support navigating through these thoughts. Together, we'll create a safety plan, and explore ways to bring meaning back to your life, even if it doesn't make sense or feel believable right now. I hold space to witness your being, just the way you are, because you matter, and things really can be greener on the other side with the right supports.

Watras Counselling and Psychotherapy Services
Registered Psychotherapist, RP, MACP, BSc
Suicidal thoughts can be scary, frustrating, and annoying, and can have a person feeling many different ways. Why our suicidal thoughts are occurring, whether they are intrusive or not, and how we understand and interact with them will impact treatment massively. when working with clients I aim to create a treatment protocol that is tailored to, and informed by, a client.

Suicidal thoughts can be characterized by thoughts and preoccupations with death and suicide. A CBT and Narrative approach will be used to explore your relationship with these thoughts. By externalizing these thoughts we will be able to explore and understand the narrative seperatly from your identity. By understanding you thoughts and behaviours we can also start the process of change.

Ottawa's identity as Canada's capital and a major hub for the federal public service creates a therapy landscape shaped by the particular stresses of government work — including bureaucratic frustration, political exposure, and the weight of careers lived in proximity to national policy decisions. The city's large bilingual population means both French- and English-speaking therapists are essential, with many practitioners offering services in both official languages. The Ottawa Hospital and Montfort Hospital provide institutional mental health resources alongside a private practice community serving the Glebe, Westboro, and Barrhaven areas. Ottawa's significant visible minority communities — including large Lebanese, Chinese, and Somali populations — drive growing demand for culturally affirming and multilingual therapists.
