Anxiety or Fears

Arne Pedersen - Hypnotherapy Victoria

Hypnotherapist, RCCH
Anxiety and fear often arise when the nervous system has learned to stay on guard, anticipating threat even when there is no immediate danger. Many people experience anxiety as persistent worry, physical tension, or a constant sense of unease — despite knowing logically that they are safe. From a mindfulness-based perspective, anxiety is understood as a protective response shaped by past experiences where uncertainty, stress, or emotional overwhelm felt difficult to manage. Over time, the nervous system can remain stuck in fight-or-flight, reacting to present situations as though the past is still happening. When the body stays in this heightened state, it uses a great deal of energy and has little opportunity to return to balance, rest, and repair. This ongoing strain can create an internal sense of threat, reinforcing the feeling that life is unsafe and causing external situations to be perceived as more dangerous or overwhelming than they actually are. In our work together, the focus is on helping the nervous system gradually recognize safety in the present moment. Through mindfulness practices, breath awareness, and body-based awareness, clients learn how to become more comfortable with uncomfortable emotions and the physical sensations that arise with them. As people gain experience staying present with these feelings, confidence grows. Anxiety often softens not because life becomes easier, but because there is a growing trust in the ability to feel, process, and move through whatever emotions life brings. When emotional capacity expands, fears lose their grip, and people experience greater freedom, clarity, and confidence in what they choose to do. Hypnotherapy can further support this process by helping update subconscious threat responses and creating felt experiences of calm, safety, and steadiness that reinforce this trust.
