Accelerated Resolution Therapy often reduces the negative emotional reaction to anxiety triggers in an average of 1 to 5 sessions. Cognitive Behavior Therapy helps clients identify and replace the unhelpful thinking that leads to uncomfortable feelings and less preferred actions. Anxiety almost always lies in the aftermath of trauma. I work with people to identify and transform the thoughts and interpretations of situations that trigger anxiety and panic. Perhaps as important, my work also emphasizes the strengthening of someone's belief in themselves and their self-concept as a whole--since we cannot control the future, we must learn to be confident in our capacity to handle whatever might come.
To make sure that my client's ability to function daily is not affected, I first create a plan that will assist in resolving the conflict that is the cause of the anxiety. After that, I focus on lowering the total frequency, intensity, and duration of the anxiety by teaching them techniques to use and possibly prescribing medication (s). My clients always remark that their anxiety decreases after a few weeks of treatment, which improves their ability to go about their everyday lives.
Anxiety and fear is at the root of nearly all our maladaptive behaviors (think - fight, flight or freeze). Our brains our wired to respond to change as negative, so even when we're following our dreams, anxiety and fear can get in the way. And when we're lost, anxiety and fear can cement us in place. But there's hope!
