I believe the parts of us that are hardest to look at — the patterns we can't explain, the reactions we regret, the feelings we'd rather not feel — hold the key to relieving suffering and finding a fuller sense of self. Those painful or shameful parts don't need fixing so much as understanding and accepting. My role is to offer clients an attuned and non-judgmental ear, and encourage a curiosity about their own inner world, while helping to recognize and interpret important signals from the nervous system — with a steady, consistent presence who can sit in the uncertainty with them. Over time, that kind of relationship can become a template for other secure, trusting connections. Clients who sense there's something beneath the surface worth exploring, even if they're not sure yet what that is, might find value in my approach.

Treatment Approach

  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
Approach Description: I work in the tradition of depth therapy — exploring the unconscious roots of behaviour, emotion, and pattern. My practice is relational, trauma-informed, and integrative in practice drawing from Attachment Theory, IFS and Polyvagal Theory with an appreciation for Jungian perspectives. We move carefully, at a pace your system can sustain.

Therapy Sessions Karen Baker Practice Description
Some of our most painful experiences don't stay in the past. Shame, grief, rage, and fear — the emotions we least want to feel — often get pushed into the shadows, where we hope they'll stay quiet. But they don't. They resurface in our patterns, our reactions, our relationships, insisting on being known. This is the territory of depth therapy: not fixing what's broken, but understanding what's been exiled. I think of myself less as an expert with answers and more as a travelling companion — someone who has made this kind of journey many times, who won't disappear when things get hard, and who has learned that getting a little lost is often where the most important discoveries happen. We move into this work carefully, at a pace your system can sustain — building safety first, then slowly turning toward what's been avoided. What once felt monstrous often reveals itself as misunderstood: a part of you that was only ever trying to protect you, or tell you something true. If you're willing to face what you find in your own shadowlands, I'd be honoured to walk that path with you.
