I am an Occupational Therapist and Psychotherapist with close to twenty years of experience in mental health, currently in my second year of the 5 Year Psychotherapy Training Program at the Gestalt Institute of Toronto. I offer a calm, non judgmental, and compassionate space for adults working through emotion regulation, trauma and PTSD, relationship concerns, role and identity shifts, and the ongoing work of making peace with the past. Drawing from Gestalt, CBT, DBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy, mindfulness, and self compassion, I help clients develop choice where it once seemed impossible. Serving Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, and the broader Durham Region in person and online across Ontario.

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) An evidence-based treatment for PTSD that teaches clients to reframe unhelpful thoughts about trauma. It helps reduce guilt, shame, and fear.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Experiential Therapy Involves hands-on activities to bring emotions into the present moment. It helps clients process feelings more deeply than through conversation alone.
  • Gestalt Therapy Encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. It helps people integrate different parts of themselves for wholeness.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
Approach Description: My approach is integrative and relational, grounded in Gestalt therapy (I am currently in Year 2 of the Gestalt Institute of Toronto's 5 Year Psychotherapy Training Program) and informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), mindfulness, compassion focused approaches, and the Occupational Therapy philosophy of finding meaning, purpose, and well being through doing. I bring a balance between acceptance and change, holding space for both the past that shaped you and the choices available to you now.

Andrea Town Practice Description
I believe there is a place within each of us that is still. Calm. Quiet. Effortless. Powerful. I believe in the inherent goodness and potential of every human being, and in our capacity to befriend life as both a teacher and a friend. Throughout my work, I have had the privilege of helping people identify and overcome their unique obstacles, supporting them as they discover new ways of relating to themselves and the world around them. I believe that who we are today makes sense in the context of our histories. The patterns we develop, even those that no longer serve us, often emerge as attempts to protect and support us. By approaching these patterns with curiosity, awareness, understanding, and compassion, we can begin to recognize how and why they came to be. In doing so, we create space for choice where it may have once seemed impossible. We open ourselves to the possibility of responding to life in new ways, ways that may be more helpful, meaningful, and aligned with who we are today. At the heart of my approach is a balance between acceptance and change. I believe in making peace with our past, learning to accept what lies beyond our control, and recognizing where we have the power to create meaningful change. Through this process, we can develop a more compassionate relationship with ourselves, embrace our capacity for growth, and move towards a greater ease in life. I am genuine, non judgmental and compassionate, and am continually inspired by our human ability to change and grow. Working together, I support my clients in developing a greater understanding of their emotional experiences and behaviour in an atmosphere of respect and self compassion. Each person's journey is unique. There are many ways of tapping into that place of internal, unshakeable goodness. We can give that pesky internal monologue less power. We can reconnect with the present. We can challenge beliefs that are not serving us. We can heal from unbearably painful events. We can slowly and courageously make changes in our lives. I am here to offer support along the way. In our first session, I will take the time to get to know you, who you are, what brings you to therapy, and what you hope to gain from our work together. If you have attended therapy before, we can explore what you found helpful or unhelpful about those experiences. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and to learn a little more about me and my approach. We will discuss current challenges you are facing, as well as patterns in yourself that you would like to explore. We will also identify your unique strengths, gifts, and resources. Therapy is a fluid and evolving process. Our areas of focus may shift over time, depending on what is happening in your life, what you are noticing within yourself, and what feels most important to you. At the beginning of each session, I will invite you to share anything you would like to focus on. I may also offer ideas based on our previous conversations about areas that could be helpful to explore more deeply. Our work will be collaborative, with the goal of helping you move toward a life that feels more meaningful and fulfilling. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to understanding people and the human experience. Psychology and human relationships have always felt like natural areas of interest for me. I continue to feel a deep curiosity about what shapes us, how we relate to ourselves and one another, and how we find our way through life. As a highly sensitive child with big emotions, my own internal experience often felt intense, and I found myself searching for a greater sense of calm and ease. My own sensitivity, combined with the challenges around me, led me to explore ways of understanding myself, navigating difficult emotions, and cultivating my own sense of well being. These personal experiences have shaped both who I am and how I approach my work as a therapist. My interest in psychology led me to major in Psychology during my undergraduate studies at Western University, followed by a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy at Queen's University. I was drawn to the Occupational Therapy philosophy of finding meaning, purpose, and well being through doing. From the beginning, I knew that I wanted my work as an Occupational Therapist to focus on mental health. As my career has evolved, I have increasingly focused on psychotherapy, continuing to deepen my knowledge, skills, and understanding of the therapeutic process. Finding the right fit in a therapist is essential, and I would be happy to meet with you to explore if we might be a good match. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can also book a free 15 minute phone consultation.
