Grounded. Refreshed. Renewed. | When “Just Pray About It” Keeps Us Stuck

Elisha S Lee

If you have ever sat in a church pew feeling like your world was falling apart, only to have a well-meaning friend tell you to “just pray about it,” you know the unique sting of spiritual bypassing.

You may have walked away feeling not only the original weight of your anxiety or grief but an added layer of spiritual shame. You might have wondered: Is my faith too weak? Why isn’t God answering this specific prayer? If I were a better Christian, would I still feel this way?

At Restoring You Christian Counseling, we believe that true transformation happens when we stop trying to “bypass” our humanity to get to our spirituality. Real renewal—being Grounded, Refreshed, and Renewed—requires us to bring our whole, messy selves into the light.

What is Spiritual Bypassing?

Spiritual bypassing is a term used to describe the tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep personal, emotional “unfinished business.” In a faith context, it is often an unconscious defense mechanism. We use a Bible verse or a pious platitude as an “exit ramp” to avoid the discomfort of painful emotions or difficult psychological work.

Common signs of spiritual bypassing include:

  • The “Praise Report” Mask: Feeling like you must always have a positive testimony, even when you are drowning in depression.
  • Emotional Suppression: Believing that “negative” emotions like anger, doubt, or fear are sinful, rather than seeing them as signals from your soul that something needs attention.
  • The Spiritual Band-Aid: Attempting to treat clinical issues—like complex trauma, OCD, or panic disorders—exclusively with spiritual disciplines while ignoring the biological and psychological components.
  • Over-Spiritualizing Reality: Using “God’s will” as a reason to stay in an abusive situation or to maintain poor boundaries.

The danger of bypassing is that while it makes us look spiritually mature on the outside, it leaves us stunted and stuck on the inside.

Why Prayer Alone Isn’t a Replacement for Healing

Prayer is vital. It is the breath of the believer. However, prayer was never intended to be a replacement for the hard work of emotional processing.

Think of it this way: If you had a broken arm, the spiritual response would be to pray for healing—and the practical response would be to go to an orthopedic surgeon to have the bone set. In the same way, counseling is often the “surgery” for the soul. It provides the structure and tools necessary for your mind and heart to heal correctly so that you can move forward in your spiritual life with more freedom.

When we tell someone to “just pray” about a deep-seated trauma, we aren’t offering them a solution; we are often handed them a heavy cloak of “not enoughness.” At my practice, I work with clients to remove that cloak. We integrate the power of the Holy Spirit with the proven tools of clinical therapy to address the root causes of your distress.

Honesty: The Language of the Bible

One of the greatest myths in modern Christianity is that “good Christians” don’t struggle with their mental health. Yet, the Bible is a collection of stories about people who were deeply, emotionally human.

  • David was “grounded” in his reality. In the Psalms, he didn’t bypass his fear; he gave it a voice, crying out to God from the depths of his despair before he found his way back to hope.
  • Elijah experienced such a profound “burnout” that he prayed for his life to end. God’s response wasn’t a lecture on faith; it was a nap, a meal, and a gentle whisper.
  • Jesus did not bypass the Garden of Gethsemane. He sat in the agony of the moment, admitting His soul was “overwhelmed with sorrow.”

If the pillars of our faith were allowed to be emotionally honest, you are allowed to be, too.

Becoming Grounded, Refreshed, and Renewed

My goal is to provide a space where you don’t have to check your faith at the door, but you also don’t have to hide your pain behind a Bible verse. Together, we will work to ground you in your true identity, refresh your spirit by releasing suppressed emotions, and renew your mind through healthy, integrated patterns of living.

Whether you are dealing with anxiety, relationship struggles, or a sense of spiritual stuckness, there is a path forward. You don’t have to bypass the pain anymore. You can walk through it, and you don’t have to do it alone.
