Treatment Approach

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Experiential Therapy Involves hands-on activities to bring emotions into the present moment. It helps clients process feelings more deeply than through conversation alone.
  • Feminist Therapy Addresses how gender roles, power, and social inequality affect mental health. It empowers clients to challenge limiting beliefs and systems.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I work from a Relational Cultural Theory model - which means that I like to get to know you through your perspective (your individual identity, relationships, and cultural/ethnic identity). I give importance to the relationship you and I create to work towards your goals for therapy - if you aren't comfortable with your therapist, you won't be able to do the work you want to do in therapy. I also use elements of Narrative Therapy, where we move into asking questions from a place of curiosity to create space for you to understand your needs better. I also use evidence based approaches such as CBT, DBT, and Mindfulness strategies. We work collaboratively together: where you are the expert on you and I bring my understanding of mental health, relationships, and wellbeing to support you.

Hira Imam Practice Details

Therapy Sessions Hira Imam Practice Description
Being a South Asian who grew up in Canada it took me years to understand why I felt like I didn't fit in. It was so obvious yet so unclear - the system isn't designed for someone like me - a woman of colour, and being a Muslim woman of colour. This is the awareness that I bring into my work with clients - that we live in a Eurocentric world, with colonial values that don't resonate with us so they shouldn't define who we are. I want to get to know you the way that you know yourself (which we may discover together in our work), I want to know about your relationships (the important ones, the messy ones, the amazing ones), and I want know about you culturally, ethnically, religiously/spiritually - all of the intersecting layers of what makes you YOU from your perspective. By putting you at the centre of our work together and exploring your goals, values, and wants, we move towards your sense of belonging in the world. We address the things that feel overwhelming and make you feel like you have to work hard to belong.
