Emotional therapy helps you understand, process, and heal from the full range of human feelings—whether it’s sadness, anger, fear, shame, or joy. Often, unresolved emotions from past experiences or trauma can shape how we respond to life today. In therapy, we create a safe, compassionate space to explore these emotions, uncover their roots, and develop healthy ways to express and regulate them. Integrating evidence-based techniques with Christ-centered support, emotional therapy empowers you to gain clarity, resilience, and a deeper connection with yourself and others.

Los Angeles, California therapist: Laura Anderson LPCC, Eff Shame Therapy, licensed professional counselor
Emotional Abuse

Laura Anderson LPCC, Eff Shame Therapy

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCC
Emotional abuse is insidious precisely because it leaves no visible marks — and because it works by making you question your own reality. The constant criticism, the gaslighting, the walking on eggshells, the slow erosion of your sense of self until you're not sure who you were before. It counts. It caused real harm. And it can be healed. I work with survivors of emotional abuse from a trauma-informed, shame-free perspective using EMDR, Flash Technique, and approaches designed to get underneath the self-doubt and the internalized voices that aren't yours to carry anymore. We work to rebuild what was taken — your trust in yourself, your sense of worth, your ability to know what's real.

Emotional Abuse

Susanna La

Psychologist, Ph.D.
When we experience emotional abuse, we come up with creative ways of coping to try to get our needs met or even to disconnect from those needs. The creative coping strategies we develop as children tend to stay with us into adulthood, especially if we haven’t developed new coping skills. Without awareness of the impacts of our pain, we tend to replicate patterns of people pleasing, hyper-independence, perfectionism, lack of boundaries, and seeking emotionally unavailable/painful relationships.

Dr. Ingrid Solano

Psychologist, PhD
Making sense of trauma, and the impact of trauma, can be accompanied by the fear that you will never be able to overcome the distress you feel when you remember the experience or when those intrusive nightmares, flashbacks, and negative thoughts come crashing into your awareness. Through trauma-focused therapy we reclaim confidence, hopefulness, intimacy, safety, self-esteem, and trust. I have specific expertise in treating trauma symptoms related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence and emotional abuse, military sexual trauma (MST), childhood and complex sexual trauma, violence, and combat trauma experienced by Veterans. These experiences can impact physical health, and daily life. Many people will experience a form of trauma in their lives. Trauma can come with feelings of shame, anger, and confusion. Posttraumatic stress is a normal human reaction to traumatic events. However, for some individuals this stress persists and interferes with their ability to live the life that they want. I work with complex cases that sometimes include dissociation, numbness, anger, risky behaviors, and years of avoidance. The treatments I provide are the most powerful and effective treatments available for these conditions. I have expertise in individual, as well as relationship (i.e., with a partner) based trauma-focused therapies. I have experienced many times how these treatments help people gain new perspectives about what happened to them, develop a sense of empowerment over their trauma, and improve their lives. These treatments can also be helpful if you feel stuck following experiences of trauma, even if you don’t have PTSD. If you’re unsure whether you want to discuss your trauma, or unsure which approach feels like a good fit for you, we can discuss your concerns. We will explore trauma-focused care that builds upon your current support, coping skills, and personal experience. I primarily employ time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) such as CPT, PE, and CBCT. (See Individual and Couples Therapy based Trauma-Focused Services.) In psychological literature, stressors are defined as events and conditions (e.g., losing a job, death of an intimate partner) that cause change and require that the individual adapt to the new situation or life circumstance. Stress processes can include the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing your authentic self, internalized homophobia, intimate partner violence, discrimination, and ameliorative coping processes that have become bad, ineffective habits. These experiences can be particularly painful when there is social pressure to conceal your experiences, or stigma. I address what it’s like to have no one to talk to about these experiences, and any distress that comes from having nowhere to do this work safely. I practice LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy that considers the impact of minority stress and chronic stress responses. Aside from these stress processes, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and heterosexuals who report any same-sex sexual partners over their lifetime, have greater risk of childhood maltreatment, interpersonal violence, trauma to a close friend or relative, and unexpected death of someone close.

Emotional abuse can often feel more challenging to heal from than physical abuse! It can twist your mind, erode your perception, and leave you fighting hard to think clearly, know who you are, and function interpersonally. Recovery from emotional abuse involves developing a safe relationship with your therapist, learning and understanding the nuances and impacts of emotional abuse, and working towards reconnecting with yourself, your feelings and needs, and your sovereign power and autonomy without shame.

Emotional Abuse Recovery: Emotional abuse can leave invisible wounds that affect your confidence, trust, boundaries, and sense of self. You may find yourself second-guessing your reality, struggling with self-worth, feeling anxious in relationships, or carrying beliefs that were shaped by manipulation, criticism, or control. As a therapist, I help clients recognize the impact of emotional abuse and begin the process of reclaiming their voice, identity, and personal power. Together, we’ll challenge harmful patterns, strengthen boundaries, and rebuild trust in yourself and your instincts. Healing is not simply about leaving unhealthy dynamics behind. Healing from Narcissistic Abuse can be a hard and painful process. Narcissistic abuse is a severe, strategic form of emotional abuse characterized by gaslighting, manipulation, and control used to diminish a victim's self-worth, often resulting in PTSD. Signs of Emotional Trauma include: Chronic self-doubt and feeling "crazy"; Hypervigilance and anxiety; Isolation and feeling worthless; Difficulty trusting one's own instincts. Therapists specializing in this area help survivors recognize the tactics and untangle the manipulation. Specialized trauma therapy focuses on breaking the trauma bond, validating reality, restoring self-esteem, and establishing boundaries to heal from these toxic power dynamics. This includes learning to say no and establishing strict boundaries to protect emotional safety, reconnecting with one's sense of self-worth separate from the abuser's perception, and developing techniques for managing stress and triggers.
