OCD

Karen Petren

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
I have been training in ERP (exposure response prevention), the gold standard in OCD treatment. Rather than simply talking about it, ERP directly targets the engine that keeps OCD going. Believe it or not, you can learn to face the trigger and not do the compulsion. “I can handle this…and nothing bad happens.” It is very effective and rewarding to see clients with OCD find relief and enjoy life.

New York City, New York therapist: Len Ramsay, registered psychotherapist
OCD

Len Ramsay

Registered Psychotherapist, Gestalt Therapist , M.B.A.
Obsession. Compulsion. Addiction. These are first cousins, thoughts and actions that seem to happen all on their own volition. In my work, there is always something good about these 3 amigos - or they would not be here in your life. The work is to discover what that is, and like in the serentiy prayer: Deal with what you can change, accept what you can't , and know the difference. Sometimes it means changing a belief, sometimes a field or environmental condition... sometimes taking care of some emotions hiding in dark places.

OCD falls under the anxiety umbrella. Often it actually begins as a coping technique to help manage anxiety but can then take on a life of its own. As a result, new ways to manage anxiety in addition to methods to decreasing OCD behavior and thoughts are required to overcome OCD.

Oakland, California therapist: Holly Hoffman, PsyD, Psychotherapy, psychologist
OCD

Holly Hoffman, PsyD, Psychotherapy

Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Psychologist in CA & NY
I specialize in treating OCD using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard, evidence-based approach for reducing obsessions and compulsions. Through ERP, we gradually and collaboratively face the thoughts, images, and situations that trigger anxiety, while resisting the urge to engage in rituals or avoidance behaviors. Alongside ERP, I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop greater psychological flexibility — learning how to make room for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings without letting them dictate their actions. My approach focuses not just on symptom reduction, but on building a life guided by personal values, even in the presence of uncertainty or fear.

Berkeley, California therapist: Gail Kirk Poust, marriage and family therapist
OCD

Gail Kirk Poust

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
OCD is a bully that takes your values hostage. It finds what you care about most (your loved ones' safety, your goodness, your faith, your relationship) and turns it into unwanted thoughts you can't shake and rituals you can't skip: checking, washing, confessing, mentally reviewing, asking for reassurance one more time. The relief never lasts, and the loop keeps tightening. Here's what I want you to know: intrusive thoughts are not intentions, and being horrified by a thought is proof of your values, not evidence against them. I treat OCD with ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), the gold-standard approach. It is collaborative, paced, never sprung on you. I also treat postpartum OCD, where intrusive thoughts about your baby leave you terrified and silent. That, too, is treatable, and having the thought is not the same as being a danger. The thoughts have had the last word long enough.

OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example. Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity. Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/ Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.

OCD

Heidi Hartston

Psychologist, PhD
I have several decades of experience working with OCD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, unwanted images, reassurance seeking and relationship OCD. Although it can be a devastating experience and can cause a traumatic level of anxiety, OCD is very responsive to the right specialized treatments. I can help you individually to empower your true wise mind and to quiet the doubting voice. I can also help with families or parents who are navigating how to distinguish helping a child with OCD versus enabling. And I can work with couples where relationship OCD or another type of OCD may be causing a rift. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques like exposure and response prevention (E&RP) and CBT that effectively free you from obsessive-compulsive patterns, and help you to reclaim the balanced, happy life you deserve. San Jose sits at the heart of Silicon Valley, where the pressures of the tech industry — performance anxiety, imposter syndrome, and the psychological cost of relentless innovation culture — drive significant demand for therapists experienced in high-achievement environments. The city's large South Asian and East Asian communities mean culturally competent therapists who understand the intersection of immigrant identity, family expectations, and mental health are particularly sought after. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente provide institutional mental health resources alongside a growing independent therapy community. Many South Bay therapists offer evening and weekend hours to accommodate the demanding work schedules common in the tech sector.
