Welcome! You might be feeling disconnected from your family, friends, children, job, or even the world. I'm Dr. Cristal Lopez, and I believe that we all have powerful strengths. Together, we will explore yours to help you unlock your full potential, connect authentically with others, and show up as your true self. My training at top U.S. children's hospitals, including Children's Hospital Los Angeles, California Pacific Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, has provided me with over 6 years of experience working with children, adolescents, young and mid-life adults, and families. With adolescents and adults, I draw on strength-based, humanistic, and relational principles to guide our work together. Beyond traditional mental health concerns, I specialize and publish work in: coping with chronic illnesses, career-related issues (burnout, work-life balance), trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and stress related to first-responder families. Single event trauma and long-term developmental trauma in childhood can each be overwhelming experiences that bring about an overwhelming set of symptoms that often end in a lot of isolation for the traumatized person. Therapy can help you re-engage with people and life again. A multi modality approach including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy couples with Object Relations Therapy and Internal Family Systems Therapy can often be an effective method for managing symptoms, getting back to feeling good, and accepting the full impact and meaning of the traumatic event(s).

San Diego, California therapist: Hilary Stokes, therapist
PTSD/Trauma

Hilary Stokes

Therapist, PHD, LCSW
We experience trauma when the stress or fear of threat overwhelm our system and we are not able to consciously process everything that is happening. Our instincts take over and our nervous system goes into survival mode to help us deal with the situation. This is a process known as neuroception, where we assess risks and react via our primal instincts. This looks like the part of our nervous system that is capable of survival and takes a primary role and we either fight, flight, freeze, appease or collapse in response to what is happening. Our rational thinking brain takes a back seat to let our instinctual emotional brain take over. Once we experience an event as traumatic, our nervous system makes it difficult to get out. The part of our brain responsible for memory of details, time, space and basic facts becomes far less active and our sensory memory takes over. We can lose track of the details making it challenging to recall what happened after the fact. The traumatic experiences get stored at a sensory, visceral, and often nonverbal level in our implicit memory. We may experience this at more of an unconscious level making it difficult to fully process at a more cognitive or conscious level. These memories tend to get suspended or stuck in time leaving a residue of unresolved distressing energy. This puts a lot of stress on the mind-body system, is exhausting and inevitably is not sustainable. Healing as a result requires accessing the implicit memories that exist outside of our ability to verbalize and rationally process our thoughts about what happened. Brainspotting, EMDR , somatic therapy and other mind body therapies known to access implicit memory networks are vital to healing. They help move memories from an unconscious and unresolved state to a more conscious and adaptive state.

San Diego, California therapist: Dr. Aleksandra Drecun, psychologist
PTSD/Trauma

Dr. Aleksandra Drecun

Psychologist, Psy.D.
Emotional and psychological trauma is the consequence of exceptionally stressful events that destroy your sense of security, making you feel helpless and vulnerable in a dangerous world. Immediately after the traumatic event, you may be struggling with upsetting emotions, frightening memories, or a sense of constant danger. Or you may feel numb, disconnected, and unable to trust others. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life, security or safety. Any event that leaves you feeling overwhelmed, fearful and alone can be traumatic. In fact, the event does not need to involve physical harm. It is not the impartial facts that determine whether an event is traumatic. Rather, a person’s subjective emotional experience of the event is relevant. The more scared and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized. When horrible situations occur, it can take some time to adequately deal with the pain and feel safe again. Psychologists can help individuals find constructive ways of managing their emotions. With the proper treatment and support, you can speed your recovery. Regardless whether the traumatic incident occurred years ago or yesterday, you can heal and move forward with your life. Facing and resolving the unbearable feelings and memories you have long avoided is imperative in healing the emotional and psychological trauma. Otherwise the symptoms will reoccur in an intrusive, distressing and unmanageable manner.

Something bad happens, nothing good follows, and everyone pretends it's okay. This simple series of events can lead to lasting emotional and physical symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms make us feel crazy. Let me assure you, you are not crazy and you are not alone. I am trained in a trauma treatment technique called eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), that can allow for integration of traumatic memories into one's healthy and coherent narrative. I would be honored to provide you a safe space to work through the painful experiences that just won't seem to go away.

Too much. Too fast. Too soon. Not enough, for too long. Too much, for too long. You define what trauma means for you. Talking it through isn't enough. We have to learn how it can feel safe for the body and mind to co-exist again, and how your system can support you as you heal one step at a time.
