Lauren Jensen

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, MSW, LCSW
One of my favorite Marvel quotes from WandaVision captures my perspective on grief and loss: “But what is grief if not love persevering?” Exactly. Grief and loss happen all the time, and not just when we lose someone we love. Grief also happens when we lose a job, our health, our marriage falls apart, we experience a miscarriage or natural disaster or we are single and desiring to be in a partnership. Grief and loss are about adapting to change - and change is everywhere. Let me walk with you and help guide you through this journey so that you can slowly and steadily learn to incorporate the grief and loss into your life in healthy ways.

Grief and loss is a normal part of the human experience, yet the suffering is intense and often lengthy. Grief work can be for the loss of a loved one, pet, job, identity, social group, dream/goal, ability, or construct. In therapy, we discuss the difference between "normal grief" (though grief looks different for different people) and "complicated grief" where any number of factors can act as a hinderance to the grieving process. Complicated grief can look like any of the following: having a complicated relationship with the deceased (unsaid words, unsettled grievances), death that is unexpected or violent, underlying attachment wounds, lack of support/understanding from your others, or any traumatic aspect of the experience surrounding the loss. At Denver Wellness Counseling, we approach grief work with the goal of healthy grief, which is a two pronged (somewhat conflicting) goal of moving on in life while also remaining connected to the deceased in a way that feels right. We often use EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) to address the complicating or traumatic factors that are hindering the grief process. Grief work always includes a component of future work, guiding the client to successfully imagine a future where they can maintain some connection to the loss, while also living what they consider a good life.

Losing a partner at any point in the relationship can be a traumatizing experience. This is because we begin our lives being attached to our parents, who hopefully provide a semblance of love and security that make us feel like the world is a caring and safe place. Some children don’t receive this kind of nurturing, but they might believe they can find it in their significant other. This is not pie-in-the-sky thinking; our romantic partnerships are actually continuations of the attachment we felt as children to our parents. Even near the beginning of the relationship we look to our partners to fulfill many of the roles a parent might fulfill, and this is appropriate. Ideally, our partners show us love in a way we feel cared for, they support us when the chips are down, and they are a space of safety we can call home. From the beginning of the relationship we all have a small sliver of hope that we might find a safe space in our partner. This is why even early relationship loss feels so devastating and sometimes like the end of the world. This is an experience no one should weather alone, and being in therapy gives you a space to visit and revisit elements of the relationship you might not have understood, cry as much as you need to cry, and feel seen and heard in a way you need to heal. You might have had a broken engagement, been ghosted by someone you’ve been dating, or had your 20 year-long marriage dissolve. You can get through this, but don’t do it alone.

There isn't necessarily a "right" way to work with grief and all losses are different. That being said, it can be invaluable to have a safe, objective place to process your pain without worrying about burdening others. Sometimes, truly being "seen" when you are grieving is immensely healing. It is an honor for me to be able to support people through grief and loss.

The pain of loss can be devastating and it can feel overwhelming not knowing when it will resolve. The subsequent mood swings can be disorienting and frustrating- feeling devastated one moment then laughing at an unexpected joke then feeling guilty about it! As having undergone many personal losses myself, I can help you navigate these complicated waters in a safe and compassionate space to honor the loss. I'm trained in EMDR, Brainspotting and Splankna to address difficult losses you might find yourself stuck in.

Losing a loved one, a dear pet, a divorce, even a hard romantic break-up is often a very painful, confusing time. Our culture does not welcome or understand grief very well. Sometimes you think it is gone, and it returns. It can easily return on anniversaries. You don't have to live with it or push through it. It is not healthy to push it down and ignore it. This can cause disease later on. I lost my mother to cancer when I was only 24. I also was her nurse. Additionally I have worked in nursing hospitals. We can work to release your grief and allow you to enjoy life again. If you are suffering with loss or grief, please schedule an appointment. You will be very glad and relieved you did.
