I assume Climate Anxiety is universally present in the collective unconscious. Joanna Macy has written: "Until the late twentieth century, every generation throughout history lived with the tacit certainty that there would be generations to follow. Each assumed, without questioning, that its children and children's children would walk the same Earth, under the same sky. Hardships, failures, and personal death were encompassed in that vaster assurance of continuity. That certainty is now lost to us, whatever our politics. That loss, unmeasured and immeasurable, is the pivotal psychological reality of our time."

Ruth Mark-Roland Psychotherapy

Registered Psychotherapist, Post Grad Diploma in Psychotherapy, Foundation and Diploma in Group Analysis
I offer support for stress, including feeling overwhelmed, emotionally overloaded, burnt out, or unable to switch off. Stress can show up in many ways, such as constant mental pressure, irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep disruption, or a sense of always being “on edge” and unable to fully relax. My approach is grounded in psychoanalytic and relational psychotherapy, offering a reflective and non-judgemental space to explore both current pressures and the underlying emotional patterns that may contribute to stress. Together, we may look at how early relational experiences, attachment patterns, and internal expectations can shape how you respond to demands, boundaries, and self-care. I work in a trauma-informed way, recognising that chronic stress is often linked not only to external pressures, but also to deeper emotional dynamics such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, anxiety, or difficulty recognising personal limits. Therapy can support you in understanding these patterns and developing more sustainable ways of relating to yourself and others. I also integrate somatic awareness to help you notice how stress is held in the body, such as tension, restlessness, or fatigue, supporting greater regulation and grounding. Psychoeducation may be used to deepen understanding of stress responses, and where appropriate, I may incorporate EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques / tapping) to support emotional release and nervous system calming. Therapy is collaborative and paced according to your needs, helping you develop greater resilience, balance, and capacity to manage life’s demands with more ease and self-compassion.

Please see any of the other entries. Stress is such a word that sometimes does a lot of heavy lifting in our world. Stress can mean brief experiences of sensory or cognitive overload, or could be an expression of anxiety, other health challenge impacting mental health. It could result from just not having language or a sense of space where one is accepted and can belong available to talk about one's challenge. Generally, if it's not CPTSD related there are lots of great ways to sort through overload and growth with working with inner feelings. If it's CPTSD and DID or other CPTSD based, parts work or other neurodevelopmentally supportive care might help. If it's oppression based or chronic health based, then it may help to share about the situation and find ways that are less taxing, require less masking, etc. to move through a situation or be at peace in it. Stress can sometimes mask grief. Our hegemonic culture has not developed or has even discarded tools for working with grief. So sometimes stress can be indicator that grief work is helpful. Also, a very real factor is disaster capitalism -- giving people a place to be real about that and its multiple devastating impacts is often very helpful. Sometimes it can open up new creative ways of addressing the challenge and finding agency that might have been inaccessible before. Sometimes there is just a need to mourn the challenges with other compassionate folks to feel less alone. Sometimes its about family or cultural conditioning to prove and succeed in an automated way, that discards the realm of emotions that unfortunately can't be stuffed or wedged out forever, as they are a useful gauge for inner and broader conditions when worked with constructively. Stress could be resultant from conditions not listed here, like being an overextended caregiver, etc. or stepping into one's first big art/creative event... If you're feeling stress, please feel free to reach out and ask for help!

Anxiety, Stress and Worry affects us all. We evolved to deal with occasional stressful threats--hence our "fight or flight" response. We did not evolve to deal with the increasing persistence and prevalence of stressful situations -- at home, in our communities, and workplaces. Anxiety about living with or after cancer invariably involves perceptions about what we imagine may happen. But the mind often has difficulty differentiating between what is real and what our imagination has created. Fortunately there is a profusion of strategies for minimising stress and the effects of worry and anxiety, and my approaches involve building self-esteem up to previous levels, mindful mediation to enable you to take a step back from worrisome thoughts, rather than become subsumed by them, and helping you reorient locus of control so you are more in control of yourself, rather than delegating responsibility to external influences.

An integrative humanistic approach to stress management involves establishing a safe and supportive counselling environment where my clients feel heard and understood, encouraging self-exploration regarding thoughts, feelings and behaviours to gain insight into your stressors, promoting self-compassion, incorporating practices such as mindfulness, meditation and relaxation exercises to address stress. A trauma-informed approach to stress-management also involves creating a safe environment, recognising trauma triggers - identifying and avoiding potential triggers that may exacerbate stress or trauma responses, offering clients choices in your treatment to encourage a sense of control and empowerment, building skills for resilience, teaching you coping skills and strategies to manage stress, ensuring consistent and reliable support throughout the therapeutic process - using mindfulness to help you stay present and reduce stress. Through somatic processing, addressing the physiological effects of stress and trauma on the body. Using CBT techniques to help clients identify and challenge harmful thought patterns and behaviours. Working in an integrative humanistic and trauma-informed way necessitates a deep understanding of my client's individual experiences and a commitment to providing empathic, holistic and empowering care. By combining the strengths of both of these approaches, I support my clients in managing stress and building resilience. This approach addresses both the immediate symptoms of stress and also promotes long-term healing and personal growth.

How Therapy Can Help with Stress - We all experience stress—it's a normal part of life. But when stress becomes chronic or overwhelming, it stops being a motivator and starts taking a serious toll on your mental and physical health. If you're feeling constantly on edge, exhausted, or like you're barely keeping your head above water, therapy can help you find your way back to balance. What Chronic Stress Looks Like Stress isn't just feeling busy or having a lot on your plate. Chronic stress can show up as: Constant worry or racing thoughts Difficulty sleeping or always feeling tired Physical symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, or stomach issues Irritability or mood swings Difficulty concentrating or making decisions Feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks Loss of enjoyment in things you used to love Using unhealthy coping mechanisms (overworking, overeating, drinking, withdrawing) When stress becomes your baseline, it's easy to forget what calm actually feels like. How Therapy Helps Understanding Your Stress Triggers Therapy helps you identify what's actually driving your stress. Sometimes it's obvious—work deadlines, financial pressure, relationship problems. Other times, stress comes from deeper sources like perfectionism, fear of failure, unresolved trauma, or difficulty saying no. Understanding the root causes is the first step toward managing them. Learning Practical Coping Skills Your therapist can teach you concrete techniques for managing stress in the moment, such as: Breathing exercises and grounding techniques Progressive muscle relaxation Mindfulness and meditation practices Time management and prioritization strategies Healthy ways to decompress and recharge These aren't just abstract ideas—they're tools you can use right away when stress starts building. Challenging Unhelpful Thought Patterns Stress often comes with distorted thinking: catastrophizing ("everything's going to fall apart"), all-or-nothing thinking ("I have to be perfect or I'm a failure"), or mind-reading ("everyone thinks I'm incompetent"). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you recognize these patterns and develop more balanced, realistic perspectives that reduce stress. Setting Boundaries and Saying No Many people experience chronic stress because they've taken on too much—at work, in relationships, or with family obligations. Therapy helps you examine why you struggle to set limits, practice saying no without guilt, and establish boundaries that protect your wellbeing. Processing Underlying Issues Sometimes stress is a symptom of deeper issues—unresolved trauma, unprocessed grief, relationship problems, or major life transitions. Therapy provides space to address these underlying concerns, which can significantly reduce your overall stress levels. Breaking the Stress Cycle Stress often creates a vicious cycle: you're stressed, so you sleep poorly, which makes you more irritable, which strains your relationships, which increases your stress. Therapy helps you identify where you can interrupt this cycle and develop healthier patterns.

Chronic stress is the nervous system stuck in activation with nowhere to discharge. When the body has been running on high alert for long enough, it stops feeling like stress and starts feeling like personality - like just the way you are. Somatic work creates the conditions for the nervous system to finally down-regulate: not through relaxation techniques, but through completing the physiological cycles that chronic stress interrupts.

Everyone talks about stress like it's normal. "Just stressed" becomes the default answer when someone asks how you are. But when stress becomes your baseline—when your body never gets to rest, when you're constantly in fight-or-flight, when you can't remember the last time you felt calm—that's not normal. That's your nervous system stuck in survival mode. You might notice it as tension headaches, trouble sleeping, irritability, or just feeling wired all the time. Your body's telling you it can't keep running at this pace, but you don't know how to slow down. Maybe you've tried meditation apps or breathing exercises, and they help for five minutes, then you're right back to it. The problem isn't that you're bad at managing stress. The problem is understanding why your system stays activated even when there's no real threat. What are you protecting against? What feels dangerous about letting your guard down? We work to understand what's keeping your nervous system on high alert, then help it learn that it's safe to rest. Not through more techniques to manage stress better, but by addressing why you're stuck in stress mode in the first place.

We all have a certain amount of stress in our lives, and we can usually cope with it. The problem starts when the pressure is unmanageable via the known coping mechanisms, and we may feel helpless, grow anxious and have all sorts of psychosomatic symptoms. There are many tools to build resilience and set a new lifestyle for your harmony to prevent this chaotic state or recover from any stress-related issues. The regular practice of mindfulness, meditation or relaxation is the foundation of my therapy work.

Counsellor/Therapist, MA (Hons), Adv Dip. Counsel. & Psychoth.,Dip. Hypnoth., X-Cultural Adaptation Coun. Reg. BACP 572613
For many women living abroad, stress is not only caused by work, responsibilities or daily pressures. Sometimes it comes from years of constant adaptation. Adapting to new countries. New languages. New cultural expectations. New versions of oneself. Many Italian women abroad become highly skilled at functioning while internally remaining in a subtle but ongoing state of alertness. Monitoring how they speak. How they are perceived. How much space they take up. How much they need to adapt in order to belong. Over time, this continuous self-monitoring can place significant strain on the nervous system and body. Many women begin to experience emotional exhaustion, tension, overwhelm, difficulty relaxing, chronic anxiety or the feeling of always having to “hold everything together”. My work explores the deeper emotional and nervous system patterns underneath chronic stress, over-functioning and long-term emotional adaptation. I integrate psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, embodiment, EFT, lifestyle medicine, reflective dialogue and nature-based practices to support women in reconnecting with a greater sense of regulation, authenticity, inner rhythm and emotional ease.

Life Coach, FHH, CLC, CPM
Stress is not always about having too much to do. Sometimes it comes from carrying too much. Constantly anticipating problems, taking responsibility for everyone else, struggling to say no, or feeling like you have to hold everything together can leave your mind and body in a constant state of tension. Together, we'll explore the patterns contributing to your stress, strengthen your capacity to regulate emotions, establish healthier boundaries, and develop practical tools that help you respond to life's challenges without becoming overwhelmed. My goal is to help you create a life that feels more balanced, intentional, and aligned with your values, rather than one driven by constant pressure and survival.

Stress is a sign your system is working overtime—and it’s asking for support, not more pressure. When life feels like too much and you’re constantly on edge, it’s often because parts of you are stuck in survival mode. Chronic stress can disconnect you from your body, drain your energy, and leave you feeling like you're just getting through the day. I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic tools like TRE to help you understand the deeper layers beneath your stress and bring your nervous system back into balance. Together, we’ll create space for calm, clarity, and resilience—so you can move through life with more ease and intention.
