Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with people whose lives have been shaped by their bodies in ways they did not choose. This may include serious or long‑term illness, chronic pain, complex diagnoses or diagnostic uncertainty, and the lingering impact of medical procedures and hospitalizations. For some, there is also medical trauma or other trauma woven in. For others, the ongoing symptoms themselves are what feel overwhelming. Many of the adults, teens, and children I see look like they are managing from the outside. They keep up with school, work, or family responsibilities and often minimize what they are going through. Inside, there may be fear, grief, anger, exhaustion, or a sense of watching life move on without them. I often work with people who are trying to navigate medical, school, or workplace systems that feel unsupportive, confusing, or exhausting, and to live a life that makes sense when very few people seem to understand what it is really like. My work is not general support for illness. I focus on how pain, illness, and medical experiences live in the nervous system and shape mood, relationships, daily life, and sense of self. We make space for the very real impact of ongoing pain or fatigue, adjusting to new diagnoses or changes in functioning, repeated medical procedures or hospital stays, encounters with dismissive or disbelieving providers, and the losses and changes that come with a life that is different from what was expected. Together, we work with your body’s responses to what has happened, the stress of navigating care and systems, and the question of how to move forward in a way that feels possible for you. Supporting people whose lives have been shaped by illness and pain is central to my practice, and I have deep respect for how much you carry that others often cannot see.

Living with chronic pain or illness can feel all-consuming, touching every aspect of daily life. Physically, the body can get caught in patterns of protection—staying in fight, flight, or freeze mode. Mentally, negative thoughts and fears can take hold, intensifying distress. Over time, life may begin to feel smaller and more restricted. My approach addresses the whole person: helping the body find balance and safety, the mind find perspective and calm, and daily life expand again toward meaningful, nourishing experiences. Together, we’ll work toward helping you live with greater ease, resilience, and a renewed sense of possibility.

Chronic Pain

Dr. David Ransen

Marriage and Family Therapist, PhD, LMFT, CHt
There are a great many chronic ailments which medical specialists either don't yet understand or cannot treat successfully. These doctors often refer their patients to me for clinical hypnotherapy, which is supported by over 75 years of published scientific evidence of efficacy for challenging chronic illness and pain. The list is long, and includes such common ailments as lower back pain (often post-surgery), IBS and other digestive system pain, fibromyalgia and mysterious non-arthritic joint pain, severe headaches, and many more. All tend to respond exceedingly well (80% to 98% enduring relief) from clinical hypnotherapy when administered by an experienced certified therapist.

Sarah Wolfer

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LICSW
Chronic pain and illness don't just live in the body, they live in the nervous system, in the identity shifts that come with a changed body, in the grief of losing the life you thought you'd have. And they're often made harder by how invisible or dismissed that experience can feel. I'm Sarah, and I work with people navigating chronic pain and illness using a body-informed approach (Somatic EMDR therapy) to help the nervous system release what it's been bracing against, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for clients where depression, grief, or emotional exhaustion have become part of the picture too. For my queer, neurodivergent, and non-monogamous clients, chronic illness also intersects with identity in ways that deserve care and nuance. You deserve a therapist who understands all of it. I have made Chronic Illness and Pain a specialty in my practice and I have trained with some of the leading experts in that area. I have worked with many chronic pain sufferers, often eliminating all their pain even when it has been a long standing problem. As far as illnesses go, I have been able to eliminate all the symptoms of a client who was suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative neurological condition related to ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. When I first met him, he had been degenerating for 12 years, was confined to a wheelchair, could no longer speak, drooled constantly, suffered from tremors and repetitive movements, inability to sleep and he lacked motivation to do his physical therapy, the only treatment doctors could offer him. With no treatment or drugs for his condition, doctors expected him to die soon most likely from choking as he lost control of his swallowing. After one session, we stopped the tremors and repetitive movements, got him to sleep more soundly and do his PT. After a second session he was able to speak again and walk again. After 5 sessions one couldn't even tell he was sick and now 6 years later he is still gardening, walking his dog, hiking in the mountains. Soon after I worked with a gentleman who had developed an adult onset form of Muscular Dystrophy called Myotonic Dystrophy. Only 45 years old, he suffered from severe chronic fatigue, finding himself unable to get out of bed in the morning, taking hours to stand up. He had muscular pain and rigidity, painful joints and various digestive issues. The morning after our first session, he woke up full of energy and jumped out of bed. After a few more sessions we eliminated all his physical symptoms as well as clearing several emotional issues that had plagued him his whole life. Recently he contacted me to update me and report his still feeling good. I have also worked with clients with MS and Parkinsons> This past year I trained and certified in treating IBS and other gut conditions, learning a protocol which is considered the most effective treatment for these issues. I have also trained and certified in Hypno-Oncology, enabling me to support patients on their Cancer journey to deal with pain, anxiety, and the effects of treatment such as nausea. Recently, I worked with a woman with stage 4 lung Cancer. Her only hope was a new experimental protocol that involved a long needle inserted into the stomach. She had a lifelong needle phobia and was terrified. After the first grueling treatment she came home and cried and vomited for 3 days. After one session she went in for her second treatment and she was able to laugh and sing show tunes with the nurses throughout the treatment, felt no pain and went home calm and relaxed.

Many people also struggle with anxiety, frustration, grief, isolation, or feeling misunderstood by those around them. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to minimize what you’re going through or hold it all together alone. Together, we focus on finding support, coping tools, self-compassion, and ways to make life feel a little lighter, more manageable, and more supportive of your needs.
