Hypnosis once again works with most people learning to control their pain. Chronic illness too can come with more losses than a loss of some functioning. These are often very stressful conditions, requiring someone to adjust their sense of themselves to fit new situations.

Chronic Pain

Stephanie Miodus

Psychologist, PhD, NCSP
I work with children, teens, young adults, and families coping with the emotional effects of chronic illness, including medical trauma and anxiety related to ongoing treatment or past hospitalizations. Living with a health condition can be overwhelming, and it is common to develop fears around medical procedures, separation, or loss of control. I provide therapy to help you or your child process these experiences, build coping strategies, and regain a sense of safety and confidence. I also support parents in navigating their own stress while learning how to respond in ways that ease anxiety and promote resilience.

Saint Petersburg, Florida therapist: Michael Zamrin, licensed clinical social worker
Chronic Pain

Michael Zamrin

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, MSW, MA
I have a strong interest in helping people reduce or eliminate chronic pain using evidence-based, mind-body approaches. I’ve completed a certification in Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a cutting-edge method for treating chronic pain, and continue to deepen my knowledge through advanced training in related mind-body techniques. These approaches are grounded in the understanding that, in many cases, chronic pain is not caused by structural damage or disease, but by neural circuits in the brain that become sensitized—often as a protective response to fear, stress, or unresolved emotions. This pain is very real, but it is what we call “neuroplastic,” meaning it can change. The brain can be retrained to stop sending pain signals once it no longer perceives a threat. Through education, emotional processing, and targeted strategies, I help clients break the cycle of pain and begin to reclaim comfort, confidence, and control in their bodies and lives.

As your therapist, I understand the challenges of dealing with chronic illness; I work hard to manage my autoimmune conditions and the resulting painful symptoms. As a result, I am dedicated to compassionately helping you manage the emotional distress and and complicated decision-making that often accompany living with chronic pain and illness. Additionally, I will help you explore strategies to reduce physical tension which in many cases reduces the intensity and frequency of physical pain. My holistic approach focuses on addressing your physical sensations of tension and pain, as well as the overwhelming emotions and unwanted thoughts that can arise. Together, we will explore the root causes of your distress and work towards creating effective solutions for a more fulfilling life while managing your symptoms. Using a variety of therapeutic modalities—including Somatic Therapies, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Eye Movement Integration, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Emotional Freedom Techniques—we will empower you to develop insight and strategies that enhance your resilience and lifestyle. I have made Chronic Illness and Pain a specialty in my practice and I have trained with some of the leading experts in that area. I have worked with many chronic pain sufferers, often eliminating all their pain even when it has been a long standing problem. As far as illnesses go, I have been able to eliminate all the symptoms of a client who was suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative neurological condition related to ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. When I first met him, he had been degenerating for 12 years, was confined to a wheelchair, could no longer speak, drooled constantly, suffered from tremors and repetitive movements, inability to sleep and he lacked motivation to do his physical therapy, the only treatment doctors could offer him. With no treatment or drugs for his condition, doctors expected him to die soon most likely from choking as he lost control of his swallowing. After one session, we stopped the tremors and repetitive movements, got him to sleep more soundly and do his PT. After a second session he was able to speak again and walk again. After 5 sessions one couldn't even tell he was sick and now 6 years later he is still gardening, walking his dog, hiking in the mountains. Soon after I worked with a gentleman who had developed an adult onset form of Muscular Dystrophy called Myotonic Dystrophy. Only 45 years old, he suffered from severe chronic fatigue, finding himself unable to get out of bed in the morning, taking hours to stand up. He had muscular pain and rigidity, painful joints and various digestive issues. The morning after our first session, he woke up full of energy and jumped out of bed. After a few more sessions we eliminated all his physical symptoms as well as clearing several emotional issues that had plagued him his whole life. Recently he contacted me to update me and report his still feeling good. I have also worked with clients with MS and Parkinsons> This past year I trained and certified in treating IBS and other gut conditions, learning a protocol which is considered the most effective treatment for these issues. I have also trained and certified in Hypno-Oncology, enabling me to support patients on their Cancer journey to deal with pain, anxiety, and the effects of treatment such as nausea. Recently, I worked with a woman with stage 4 lung Cancer. Her only hope was a new experimental protocol that involved a long needle inserted into the stomach. She had a lifelong needle phobia and was terrified. After the first grueling treatment she came home and cried and vomited for 3 days. After one session she went in for her second treatment and she was able to laugh and sing show tunes with the nurses throughout the treatment, felt no pain and went home calm and relaxed.

Seattle, Washington therapist: Sarah Wolfer, licensed clinical social worker
Chronic Pain

Sarah Wolfer

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LICSW
Chronic pain and illness don't just live in the body, they live in the nervous system, in the identity shifts that come with a changed body, in the grief of losing the life you thought you'd have. And they're often made harder by how invisible or dismissed that experience can feel. I'm Sarah, and I work with people navigating chronic pain and illness using a body-informed approach (Somatic EMDR therapy) to help the nervous system release what it's been bracing against, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for clients where depression, grief, or emotional exhaustion have become part of the picture too. For my queer, neurodivergent, and non-monogamous clients, chronic illness also intersects with identity in ways that deserve care and nuance. You deserve a therapist who understands all of it.
