Marriage and Family Therapist, DMin, MART, MA, ALMFT
Infidelity can be one of the most painful experiences a couple faces, often leaving behind deep feelings of betrayal, anger, shame, and uncertainty about the future. As an Adlerian couples therapist, I help partners understand not only what happened, but also the relationship dynamics that made healing so difficult. Whether your goal is to rebuild trust and reconnect or to gain clarity about the future of your relationship, I provide a structured, compassionate, and nonjudgmental environment where honest conversations can take place. Together, we work toward rebuilding accountability, forgiveness when appropriate, healthier communication, and a renewed foundation of mutual respect, cooperation, equality, intimacy and desire, and hope.

Infidelity rips trust. Not only is it cheating on a spouse or significant other, but the secrecy is what can tear a hole in the marriage or relationship that seems irreparable . However I know how to help couples and support them as they do the hard work of going through the phases of forgiveness, growing in understanding of themselves and each other and eventually reestablishing trust. Infidelity can profoundly affect trust, self-esteem, and a person's sense of security within a relationship. I have extensive experience helping individuals navigate the emotional aftermath of betrayal, whether they are considering rebuilding the relationship, deciding whether to move forward separately, or simply trying to make sense of what has happened. While couples therapy can be an important part of the healing process, individual therapy offers a space to process your own emotions, clarify your needs and values, and make thoughtful decisions about the future of your relationship.

In supporting individuals dealing with infidelity in their relationship or marriage, I provide a compassionate and nonjudgmental space for them to process their emotions and navigate the complexities of their situation. Through therapy, we explore the underlying factors contributing to the infidelity, such as communication issues, unmet needs, or underlying relationship problems. I offer strategies to cope with intense emotions such as anger, betrayal, or grief, and facilitate open and honest communication between partners. Additionally, we work on rebuilding trust, setting boundaries, and exploring the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation if desired. Infidelity is more than a breach of trust - it is often experienced as trauma. Discovery can trigger shock, hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts, and a deep loss of safety. I specialize in working with individuals impacted by affairs, and relational deception using a partner-sensitive, trauma-informed approach. Rather than minimizing the harm or rushing toward forgiveness, my work prioritizes stabilization, validation, and clarity. Whether you are seeking answers, rebuilding trust, or discerning the future of your relationship, I provide structured support to help you regulate your nervous system, establish boundaries, and reclaim your voice. Bloomington, Illinois therapist: Tim Jenkins, counselor/therapist
Infidelity

Tim Jenkins

Counselor/Therapist, LCPC
Through the twenty year private practice career as a counselor, I have had a special interest in helping couples that were on the brink of divorce or separation. Many of them found themselves here due to infidelity. It is a special thing to help people to first understand infidelity; why it happens and what to do about it. Primarily, partners often feel that infidelity is their fault: that they did not do something well enough or that they are not attractive, pretty or handsome enough. That is the furthest thing from the truth. Infidelity most often happens due to sexual addiction, or due to the lack of feeling happy with one's self. When another shines their warm light of attention on you, and pays you lots of compliments, it can be very addictive to achieve that dopamine rush. There is also the element of the Coolidge effect. There is a biological thing that happens in animals. Males, (and to some extent females of the species) experience renewed sexual interest whenever a new partner is introduced. This phenomenon comes about from an anecdote about Calvin Coolidge when he was President. The President and Mrs. Coolidge were being shown around an experimental government farm walking with two separate groups of reporters. When the first lady, whom was known to have a lot of moxie, came to the chicken yard she noticed that a rooster was mating very frequently. She asked the attendant how often that happened and was told, "Dozens of times each day." Mrs. Coolidge said, "Tell that to the President when he comes by." Upon being told this, President Coolidge asked, "Same hen every time?" The reply was, "Oh, no, Mr. President, a different hen every time." President: "Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge."

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania therapist: Philadelphia Couples Therapy, psychologist
Infidelity

Philadelphia Couples Therapy

Psychologist, PsyD
There was a period of time in our country where partners were expected to stay with their spouse after an affair. It was considered deeply shameful to divorce. The tables seem to have turned, however, as we now live in a more autonomous and self-realizing culture; it’s often expected that the ‘victim’ of an affair will leave the unfaithful spouse in order to make a statement of self-respect. Now, if you stay with your partner after they’ve had an affair, you may feel ashamed and humiliated, as though you’re not strong enough to leave. You may even hear from well-meaning friends and family that “you deserve better.” Although the therapists at PCT are by and large hopeless romantics, we are also realists. We are under no illusions that romantic partnerships are easy, but we also know affairs happen for a multitude of reasons. Many cases of infidelity can be mended, repaired, and used as a growth opportunity for the couple. We are here to walk this excruciating journey with you- we know where the guideposts are, we know what recovery looks like. Sometimes you will feel like you’re backsliding, but it’s only a product of healing. It’s a confusing and painful experience, but often, in the end, absolutely worth it. We are here to help.
