A diagnosis reaches well beyond medical care. There is the question of whom to tell and when, and what disclosure will cost. There is stigma that persists despite everything now known about treatment and transmission. There may be anger, fear about the future, complicated feelings toward the person you contracted it from, or the particular grief carried by long-term survivors who lost a generation of friends.
I work psychoanalytically, which means we take up what living with HIV has meant to you, not only how you are managing it. The shame or fatalism that can attach to a diagnosis carries an unconscious logic worth understanding, and it often draws on much older beliefs about deserving illness or being unlovable. This work sits alongside your medical care rather than replacing any part of it.
