Beth Janis
Psychologist, Ph.D.
Communication difficulties are often at the center of relational conflict; partners and family members may feel missed, disconnected, unheard, and misunderstood. Couples sessions are geared toward reworking the communication and interaction patterns that may have become ingrained in your partnership or family unit - to assist in rebuilding trust, connection, and cohesion. Learning about ourselves, the ways we show up in our relationships, and our response tendencies can shed important light on these patterns, the relational needs that are unmet within them, and ways to step outside of them. One of the most important first steps in our work together is to begin seeing these overarching patterns as the reasons for pain, rather than treating the pain as being the fault of an individual partner or family member.

Psychologist, PsyD; LLC
I love working with couples! In coupleship, I believe you need a large assortment of interventions to accomodate all the different personalities, but the one thing that remains consistent is 'Effective Communication.' LEARNING how to LISTEN, convey feelings, validate, and empathize. I use a combination of Imago, Emotional Focus Therapy, and some of the wonderful skills taught by the Gottmans.

Elka Cubacub
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
Our relationships are central to who we are. Intimate relationships, in particular, hold up a mirror to us, often triggering our deepest vulnerabilities and wounds. Conflict in relationships is inevitable. Research shows that about 69% of conflicts are never fully resolved because they stem from fundamental differences between two people. The goal of therapy isn’t to eliminate conflict but to help you navigate it in ways that bring you closer rather than push you apart. I draw from the Gottman Method, a research-based approach that identifies the patterns distinguishing successful relationships from struggling ones. Together, we’ll build skills you can practice both in and outside of therapy to strengthen connection and communication. I especially enjoy working with couples navigating tension rooted in political, ideological, or religious differences.

Debra Alper, Life Transitions Counseling PLLC
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
Not all couples come into counseling because of a crisis in their relationship. Many clients that I see describe a parallel functioning to their relationship- almost like 2 ships sailing on parallel paths but not really every connecting. There are few things more painful that being lonely when you are not alone but with a partner. Therapy can help to address that and to give you the skills and understanding to make changes in your relationship.

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.
Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it.
I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it?
It is better to be close than it is to be “right.”
Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong."
Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy
Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

Chris Scarberry
Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC
I hold a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. Whether I work with individuals, couples, or families, I look at the make-up of people's lives systemically. One's childhood experiences, family relationships, and attachment styles all create a framework for one's thought, behavior, and actions. There is always more going on with people than what is happening in the therapy room. I enjoy working with couples and families a great deal because it gets at some of these root concerns more effectively and can be more transformative for the individuals involved. I employ interventions from Gottman, Structural, and Strategic Family Therapy. I see couples at different points, wanting to maximize their relationship, wanting to save it, wanting to end things. I work with LGBTQ+ and non-monogamous couples and families on a regular basis as do the other therapists in our practice.
