You might be the one everyone leans on—always available, endlessly supportive, and quick to smooth things over. But underneath that strength, there’s a quiet exhaustion. Maybe you’ve spent so long tending to others that you’ve lost touch with your own voice. You may struggle to set boundaries, prioritize your own needs, or feel okay when someone else is upset. Maybe you define your worth through how much you give or help, but deep down, you’re craving space to just be… without performing, fixing, or proving. At The Momentum Practice, I help clients untangle patterns of codependency that often start early—growing up in families where your worth was tied to being helpful, agreeable, or emotionally attuned to others. These patterns can show up in adult life in all kinds of relationships: romantic partnerships, friendships, caregiving roles, family systems, and even the workplace, where over-functioning often gets mistaken for excellence. You might find yourself constantly people-pleasing, second-guessing your instincts, or feeling panicked at the thought of being left behind. They can be especially layered for LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent folks who’ve had to mask parts of themselves to stay safe, loved, or accepted. We’ll explore how these ways of relating helped you survive—and how they might be keeping you stuck now. Together, we’ll work on building boundaries that feel empowering (not selfish), tuning into your own needs and desires, and letting go of the belief that your value comes from how much you give. We’ll also look at how systemic pressures may have reinforced these patterns over time. Our work might include unlearning perfectionism, quieting the inner critic, and cultivating self-trust that isn’t tied to how much you do for others. With over 15 years of experience, I offer a compassionate space to reconnect with your own voice and needs. You don’t have to keep disappearing in your relationships. Whether we’re working one-on-one or navigating these dynamics in couples therapy, you’ll have a space to explore what healthier, more mutual connection can look like. If you're ready to show up more fully for yourself and build connections that don’t come at the cost of your own well-being, I’d be honored to journey alongside you. By fostering self-awareness and teaching adaptive coping strategies, I support clients in creating more balanced and fulfilling relationships while reducing reliance on dysfunctional dynamics.

Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Codependency

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
I have worked with codependents for many years. John Bradshaw, a popular author and leader in this field, referred to me as a “Master Therapist.” The concept of Codependency, though not included in the Diagnostic Manual, points to relationships that have become dysfunctional with one person so enmeshed in being the Caregiver (the Giver) that they enable the other (the Taker) to constantly receive without giving support and care in return. This dynamic can occur in any kind of relationship, not just romantic. Although the role of the Giver arises out of loving kindness, there is an element of attachment to being the “Rescuer” that enables the Taker to continue their dysfunctional behaviors (e.g. substance abuse, gambling, sex addiction, abusiveness, etc.) as the Giver inadvertently shields them from the results of their dysfunctional behaviors. If this dynamic is not interrupted, the Giver eventually becomes exhausted, frustrated and burned out, in need of the support, healing, and self-awareness provided through therapy. I offer free zoom seminars, which give you a taste of how I can help with relationship issues. Please feel free to call for a consultation: 301-229-8000.

Licensed Professional Counselor, PhD, LCPC, NCC
Codependency is a behavioral condition in a relationship where one person enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. Among the core characteristics of codependency is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and a sense of identity. In our work together, we will explore/examine the issues related to the behavior and improve the reasoning behind co-dependency.

Setting healthy boundaries is something many of us did not effectively learn in childhood, even in the most well meaning and loving of families. We have, instead, learned to live life to serve others and to prioritize the needs of others, even when doing so harms ourselves. My approach is to help my clients create healthy boundaries, advocate for the self, learn to communicate our needs clearly and directly, and then learn to act upon the needs we have outlined to those we love so we can cultivate healthy and mutually effective relationships. Cutting the ties of codependency is central to this process: staying in one's own lane, letting others solve their own problems, offering compassion and help when asked, letting go of the rescue fantasy, living without an emotional hangover, and learning to accept that there is much we cannot control.

In my practice, I integrate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients with codependency develop mindfulness skills and cultivate self-compassion while committing to actions that align with their values and autonomy. Additionally, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques assist clients in identifying and challenging maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors associated with codependency, promoting healthier boundaries and self-esteem. Incorporating Person-Centered Therapy principles, I provide a supportive and empathetic environment for clients to explore their emotions and experiences, empowering them to reconnect with their authentic selves and build healthier relationships.

Codependency isn’t just about “losing yourself in a relationship.” It’s a survival strategy — often born from childhood environments where attunement, safety, or emotional permission were inconsistent or absent. In our work together, we gently unravel these patterns, not by labeling you as broken, but by honoring the intelligence of the parts that learned to over-function, over-give, and under-receive. I help clients build internal boundaries before external ones — learning to recognize where they end and others begin. Together, we practice new relational templates rooted in self-trust, emotional honesty, and reciprocity. This isn’t about becoming “independent” in a vacuum. It’s about reclaiming yourself without losing connection — perhaps for the first time.

Our counseling services for codependency are designed to address and heal the patterns of behavior that lead individuals to form or maintain one-sided, emotionally destructive, and often abusive relationships. Understanding that codependency stems from deep-seated needs and often begins in one's family of origin, we provide a supportive environment that promotes self-awareness, independence, and healthier relational dynamics. Empowering Self-Sufficiency and Healthier Relationships * Identifying Patterns: We help clients identify patterns of codependent behavior and understand the underlying psychological factors that contribute to these patterns, such as low self-esteem, fear of abandonment, or an excessive need for approval. * Establishing Boundaries: A key focus of counseling is teaching clients how to establish and maintain healthy boundaries in relationships. This includes learning to say no, recognizing one's own needs and desires, and understanding the distinction between helping and enabling. * Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is utilized to challenge and change unhelpful beliefs and behaviors that perpetuate codependency, fostering a healthier, more autonomous sense of self. * Building Self-Esteem: Counseling sessions are geared toward boosting self-esteem and self-worth, empowering clients to feel confident in standing alone and valuing their own well-being as much as they value the well-being of others. * Encouraging Interdependence: We focus on transitioning from codependency to interdependence, where healthy, mutual give-and-take relationships are the norm. Goals of Counseling for Codependency Our therapy for codependency aims to: * Promote Self-Reliance: Encourage a stronger, more independent self-identity separate from one’s relationships. * Healthy Relationship Dynamics: Facilitate the development of relationships characterized by mutual respect, balance, and emotional honesty. * Enhanced Emotional Regulation: Equip clients with skills to manage their emotions effectively, reducing the tendency to use relationships as a way to soothe or suppress these feelings. * Increased Awareness: Heighten self-awareness regarding the origins and triggers of codependent behaviors, enabling proactive changes. * Lifestyle Adjustments: Support clients in making practical changes to their lifestyles that reinforce healthy interpersonal behaviors and thought patterns. Codependency can overshadow your sense of self and disrupt your ability to maintain balanced, fulfilling relationships. With our support, you can uncover the roots of your codependent behaviors, develop a healthier approach to relationships, and embrace a more self-directed life. Reach out today to start your journey toward lasting change and relational health.

Patients with this disorder are getting resilient in no time. I get their habit disorder treated by my Dicit hyptherapy and clinical hypnosis. How Hypnotherapy Treats Codependency: Hypnotherapy works to change underlying, often subconscious, beliefs such as "I am only valuable if I am helping others" or "I must fix my partner's problems".Setting Boundaries: It helps individuals establish healthy emotional boundaries and gain the confidence to say "no" without guilt. Addressing Root Causes: By relaxing the mind, therapists can access memories or traumas that triggered the codependent behavior to foster emotional healing. Building Self-Esteem: Hypnotherapy helps individuals reconnect with their own needs, interests, and identity outside of the relationship.
