OCD results in great distress and fear for day-to-day tasks and situations. It is our human nature to try to quell this fear; however, this can be part of what keeps the cycle going. I use an exposure based approach (ERP) of exploring your fears and responses while gaining confidence through practicing actions.

In my treatment for OCD, I provide a specialized approach centered on Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard for breaking the cycle of intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. I work closely with you to identify your triggers and develop structured exercises that help you face fears without relying on compulsions, gradually reducing their power over your life. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a very debilitating set of symptoms and is something for which I use a therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ExRP or ERP). This therapy is widely considered to be the most effective treatment for OCD available. I will teach you how to approach situations that create obsessive thinking and emotional distress and how to simultaneously resist acting on urges to engage in your compulsive behavior. The result is the ability to be in these situations with significantly less distress and without overwhelming compulsive urges. People with OCD are typically amazed at what they can achieve through this therapy.

Living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can feel exhausting, with intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that seem impossible to quiet, and repetitive behaviors or rituals that feel necessary just to get through the day. OCD is not about being “overly neat”—it’s about anxiety, uncertainty, and the need for relief from distressing thoughts. In therapy, I provide evidence-based support (including ERP, CBT, and mindfulness strategies) in a safe, non-judgmental space. Together, we’ll work to reduce the power of obsessions, ease compulsions, and build healthier coping strategies so you can feel more in control and free to live your life with greater balance and peace.

OCD can be mild to debilitating, and is often missed and treated as anxiety. I've found that OCD and Health Anxiety, as well as Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs, ie. skin picking, hair pulling/tweezing, nail/cuticle biting) can sometimes co-exist together. I'm trained in treating OCD through two of the primary evidence based OCD treatment modalities -Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP/ExRP). I-CBT is a newer evidence based treatment for OCD that focuses on gaining certainty versus pushing yourself into uncertainty, and is thought to be a gentler approach. There are many types of OCD and the thought-based "invisible" types are the most often missed forms of OCD, often called the "Pure O subtype" meaning that the obsessions/thoughts are there, but that the compulsions are mental and not outwardly visible, as we've come to expect from what we see about OCD in the media/social media. There are many forms of OCD, including Postpartum OCD, Relational (romantic as well as platonic) OCD, Harm OCD, Perfectionism/Just Right OCD, Contamination OCD, Scrupulosity or Religious OCD, Checking OCD, Obsessional OCD, Sexual Orientation OCD, Pedophilia OCD, and Superstitious OCD, among others. I'm trained in treating BFRBs using multiple modalities including, Habit Reversal Training, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Comprehensive Model for the Behavioral Treatment of BFRB and DBT, which help to reduce the symptoms of BFRBs.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) counseling is a specially designed to help individuals who are struggling with the often debilitating symptoms of OCD. This mental health disorder is characterized by unwanted and intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions). Our counseling services focus on providing varied approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), to reduce the occurrence and impact of OCD symptoms, thereby improving daily functioning and quality of life. Evidence-Based Treatment for OCD * Tailored CBT Techniques: We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients identify and challenge the distorted thinking patterns that fuel their obsessions and compulsions. * Exposure and Response Prevention: ERP involves gradually exposing clients to their feared objects or ideas (exposures) and teaching them to resist the urge to carry out their usual compulsive acts (response prevention). * Skills Training: Clients are trained in stress management and relaxation techniques to help manage the anxiety that often accompanies OCD. * Mindfulness and Acceptance: Incorporating elements of mindfulness helps clients learn to accept their obsessive thoughts without acting on them compulsively. * Family Involvement: We provide support and education for families of individuals with OCD so that they can better understand the disorder and offer the right kind of support to their loved ones. Goals of OCD Counseling Our OCD counseling services strive to: * Reduce OCD Symptoms: Aim to significantly decrease the frequency and severity of obsessions and compulsions. * Increase Functionality: Help clients regain control over their lives and engage more fully with work, school, and social activities. * Enhance Coping Skills: Equip individuals with tools and strategies to manage OCD symptoms independently and effectively. * Improve Quality of Life: Focus on improving overall well-being, satisfaction, and happiness in life beyond OCD symptoms. * Prevent Relapse: Provide clients with the knowledge and skills to maintain their progress and prevent the recurrence of severe OCD symptoms. OCD counseling is a path toward reclaiming a sense of normalcy and freedom from the cycles of obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Our commitment lies in delivering compassionate and competent care tailored to each individual’s experience. Seattle, Washington therapist: Aaron Kapin, somatic experiencing practitioner
OCD

Aaron Kapin

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
If you have diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder that's actively disrupting your life, make sure you find a specialist to work with. If you have a specialist, or your tendencies are more mild (i.e. not an active threat to your health and well-being), let's talk. Somatic Experiencing has the potential to help you track with the physical aspect of a compulsion, that is, instead of thinking about what the urge is, you feel what the urge feels like. It's hard to believe it till you experience it, but once you can find the physical aspect of a compulsion and learn to track it with some curiosity, it has the potential to change more quickly than addressing the specifics of the compulsion itself. Again, this isn't a treatment for an OCD diagnosis, but it can be a great supplement to treatment, helping you feel safer and more settled in your body as you navigate this.

Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) is the way to go, here. Did you know that there is such as thing as "Pure obsessive" or "Pure O" OCD? Not all OCD involves behavioral compulsions such as counting or hand washing. Some of it is mental compulsions only! Unless you're a true expert, diagnosing OCD can be extremely difficult. Misdiagnoses can be dangerous and costly.
