Quality Psychotherapy Online! COVID Update: We are grateful and honored to be able to provide support to the community during this incredibly challenging time. For the safety of our clients, staff, and the community-at-large, we encourage clients to choose tele-health appointments when possible. Do you want support, but find it challenging to make it to an appointment? Now you don’t have to commute or even leave home. Online counseling will allow us to work collaboratively in a supportive environment, wherever is most convenient for you. Washington Psychological Wellness provides counseling via confidential, real time, 2-way video. Our clinicians use a HIPAA-compliant secure video conferencing to make online-based therapy convenient and confidential. All you need is a comfortable private space, internet connection and a smart phone, tablet, laptop or personal computer. When you schedule your appointment, a secure video link is created for your appointment and sent to you via email. When it's time for your scheduled appointment, simply click the link and we will be connected! COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT TELEHEALTH (FAQ's) We know that online therapy can bring up understandable hesitations and questions. We are happy to put your mind at ease and provide further information about what to expect. Is it confidential? Absolutely. Our therapists maintain strict confidentiality standards for your protection. This means your sessions cannot be recorded. During this time of social distancing, our therapists are exclusively providing counseling via video from their office, or from areas of their home that have privacy. Now we can’t completely promise that your provider’s cat or dog won’t briefly stop in to say hello - but don’t worry, they have been fully trained in our HIPAA protocols! Will it be covered by my insurance? Most healthcare plans provide coverage for telehealth just like in-office therapy. While this is often at your regular copay, coinsurance and/or deductible, there are some variations depending on your specific policy. If you and your therapist are not sure about your benefits, please reach out to Washington Psychological Wellness and your insurance provider. If you run into any coverage issues, we are happy to work with you on payment options during this crisis. Even if you think you don’t have coverage for telehealth, or can’t afford payment, please give us a call -- we continue to get updates from insurance plans that are expanding telehealth benefits as our culture adapts to the developing needs. I’m still not sure telehealth is right for me - maybe I should wait until I can see a therapist in person? It's understandable to want to have or continue an in-person therapy. However, in these very unpredictable times, it is unclear how long this will be our new normal. There are a variety of estimated time frames suggested for social distancing measures lasting from 6 weeks to 18 months. Connecting with a counselor via video is an easy way to get started with care -- or avoid disrupting your care -- and to receive consistent support toward your goals. This can become even more important during these stressful times. Have telehealth therapy sessions been proven to be effective? Yes. There have been numerous studies conducted showing that telehealth is just as effective as in-person counseling. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) published a physician reviewed article in 2017 that notes the following: “There is substantial evidence of the effectiveness of telepsychiatry and research has found satisfaction to be high among patients, psychiatrists and other professionals. Telepsychiatry is equivalent to in-person care in diagnostic accuracy, treatment effectiveness, quality of care and patient satisfaction. Patient privacy and confidentiality are equivalent to in-person care.”

I have started offering teletherapy in addition to in-person appointments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but plan to continue for the convenience of therapy clients even after the pandemic ends. Teletherapy has proven to be a viable and effective option for clients who otherwise for various reasons would not be able to access therapy services in person.

Karla Lawrence

Counselor/Therapist, LCPC, BC-TMH, CPC
Hello, my name is Karla Lawrence, and I run a distance (online) counseling and coaching practice for adult individuals in Maryland. I specialize in self-care, anxiety, depression, codependency, stress and burnout recovery counseling for compassionate women & soulful introverts. While online (tele-therapy) is not the right choice for everyone, in many cases it can be just as effective as in-person therapy. You can easily schedule an appointment during your work day, at home, or after you've put the kids to bed. You can save money and time while still making your mental/emotional health a priority. If you identify as a people pleaser, “nice” girl/guy/person, introverted, shy, and/or highly sensitive person in Maryland, I would love to help.

Asking for help is challenging enough, and I believe that the online format removes some of the other stressors normally associated with beginning therapy. One of the most important "ingredients" for success in therapy is feeling comfortable in the therapy setting. With online therapy, clients enjoy the convenience of meeting with me from wherever they feel most comfortable. Online therapy also eliminates the need for a commute to an office or sitting in a waiting area. With some of the stress eliminated, we can really get to work!

With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy on secure, easy-to-use, high-quality internet platforms. Online sessions allow you to do therapy in the comfort of your own home or allow you flexibility in environments that best suit you. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons. While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions. I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting. Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be. If you are not super-computer savvy or are anxious about how to use technology, I will work to make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns. A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children and/or family members or roommates. Be sure and scope this out in advance so you are guaranteed quiet and privacy during your session. Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session. Headphones or Airpods can often make audio clearer or ensure more privacy but are not necessary. Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, sit in their car in the driveway, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are. You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting, and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.
