I can help fix that. <br>Both of you are right from your own perspective. Strong relationships aren’t built on perfection — they’re built on honesty, grace, and growth. Marriage isn’t about finding someone who completes you, but walking beside someone who inspires you to become whole. Real love requires forgiveness, communication, and a shared commitment to healing, even when it’s hard. With faith as the foundation, couples can restore trust, deepen intimacy, and rediscover joy. Love isn’t just a feeling — it’s a daily choice to honor, listen, and grow together. When two hearts surrender pride and choose purpose, marriage becomes what God intended — a partnership of strength, unity, and unconditional love.

Childhood patterns often emerge in the context of our intimate love relationships. Work to identify and unpack these can be very helpful at bringing these into awareness and helping folks choose rather than react. Core themes in relationship work include differentiation and taking responsibility for self-regulation emotionally which can set the stage for true intimacy as opposed to tangled patterns of reactivity.

When conflict, emotional distance, or the “roommate phase” takes over, it can feel like the connection you once had is slipping away. In couples therapy, we use Emotionally Focused Therapy to identify the negative cycles keeping you stuck, uncover the underlying emotions and needs, and help you reach for each other in ways that rebuild safety, trust, and closeness—both emotionally and sexually. Whether you want to repair, deepen, or simply understand your patterns better, this is a collaborative space to create the kind of marriage or relationship that feels good again.

Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

Relationship and marriage counseling helps couples understand patterns that lead to conflict, distance, or emotional disconnection. Many couples seek therapy when conversations feel unproductive, trust has been strained, or intimacy has declined. Relationships can feel especially challenging when your brain works in ways that don’t quite match what others expect. At Dr. Shoup’s practice, you’ll find a therapeutic space built around how you think: full of empathy, structure, and insight. Because we understand how intense focus, rapid associations, or lingering disconnects impact connection, we tailor couples and relational work to translate misunderstandings into deeper understanding, and build communication strategies that really work for your unique style.
