Saint Louis, Missouri therapist: Chris Scarberry, licensed professional counselor
Relationships

Chris Scarberry

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC
I hold a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. Whether I work with individuals, couples, or families, I look at the make-up of people's lives systemically. One's childhood experiences, family relationships, and attachment styles all create a framework for one's thought, behavior, and actions. There is always more going on with people than what is happening in the therapy room. I enjoy working with couples and families a great deal because it gets at some of these root concerns more effectively and can be more transformative for the individuals involved. I employ interventions from Gottman, Structural, and Strategic Family Therapy. I see couples at different points, wanting to maximize their relationship, wanting to save it, wanting to end things. I work with LGBTQ+ and non-monogamous couples and families on a regular basis as do the other therapists in our practice.

I completed advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. EFT can benefit couples who are struggling with conflict, distress, and poor communication and help improve emotion related problems and build connection. It can also help family members form more secure bonds with one another. EFT has also proven to be a powerful approach for couples dealing with infidelity or other more traumatic incidents, both recent and past and relies on the significance of secure attachment.

Dr Todd Giardina

Psychologist, PhD, Counseling Psychology
Even when I treat individuals, so often we end up doing a form of relationship counseling, because we ARE our relationships. The people in our life affect us, and learning how to set boundaries and communicate differently is always a part of my treatment. Of course, this is easier when I get to work with both members of a couple (or family), in that I can then "hear both sides of the story." I am able to "speak" both male and female languages, so I find I can aid in translating and getting everyone to feel heard. (As a male therapist, this defuses some of the hesitation many male partners have about approaching therapy).

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

Marriage and couples counseling provides an arena where two people can learn to communicate individual needs and find ways to resolve relationship differences. Strong relationships aren’t built on perfection — they’re built on honesty, grace, and growth. Marriage isn’t about finding someone who completes you, but walking beside someone who inspires you to become whole. Real love requires forgiveness, communication, and a shared commitment to healing, even when it’s hard. With faith as the foundation, couples can restore trust, deepen intimacy, and rediscover joy. Love isn’t just a feeling — it’s a daily choice to honor, listen, and grow together. When two hearts surrender pride and choose purpose, marriage becomes what God intended — a partnership of strength, unity, and unconditional love.

Dr. Amy Hecht

Psychologist, PhD
I work with couples at all stages of their relationships, from those looking to deepen connection to those navigating significant strain or considering major decisions about the future. Relationships can be both deeply fulfilling and profoundly challenging, and many couples find themselves stuck in patterns of miscommunication, disconnection, or recurring conflict. My approach is active, direct, and grounded in helping both partners better understand not only each other, but their own contributions to the dynamic. I focus on identifying patterns, improving communication, and fostering greater emotional awareness and accountability within the relationship. I also draw from structured approaches, including discernment counseling when one partner feels uncertain about whether to stay or leave, creating space for thoughtful, intentional decision-making. The goal is not simply to reduce conflict, but to help couples build more meaningful, resilient, and satisfying ways of relating—whether that leads to strengthening the relationship or gaining clarity about next steps.

Couples argue about many things, and it's normal to have disagreements. What you do at those times will determine whether your relationship will survive. Learning how to communicate effectively, from a position of love and respect, is my main focus when working with couples.
