Postpartum depression is far more common than most new mothers are told — and far more treatable than it feels in the middle of it. If you are experiencing postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, intrusive thoughts, or an overwhelming sense that something is wrong despite doing everything right, you are not failing as a mother. As a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in perinatal mental health, postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and maternal mental health, I provide compassionate, evidence-based therapy designed specifically for new and expecting mothers navigating one of life's most significant transitions. Bringing a new life into the world is often painted as a time of joy and fulfillment—but for many, it is also a time of overwhelming emotions, exhaustion, and self-doubt. If you’ve been feeling more anxious, numb, or hopeless than excited, you are not alone. Maybe you struggle with guilt over not feeling the way you think you "should," or you find yourself withdrawing from loved ones. Perhaps everyday tasks feel impossible, or waves of sadness and frustration leave you feeling unrecognizable to yourself. Postpartum depression is not a reflection of your love for your baby or your abilities as a parent—it is a real and treatable condition that many experience. Together, we will create a space where you can be honest about what you're going through, free from judgment. You deserve support, understanding, and the reassurance that you are not failing—you are adjusting to a profound life transition. With the right tools and care, it is possible to reconnect with yourself, find relief from the weight of depression, and move toward a place of balance and self-compassion.

Kreins Psychological Services

Psychologist, PhD, PsyD
As a psychologist specializing in postpartum depression, my approach to treatment is compassionate, holistic, and tailored to the unique needs of new mothers. Through evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and support groups, I provide a safe space for women to express their feelings, explore the challenges of motherhood, and develop coping strategies. By addressing factors such as hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and social support, I help mothers navigate the complex emotions associated with postpartum depression. Additionally, I collaborate closely with healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care, including medication management when necessary. Psychoeducation about postpartum depression and self-care practices are also integral parts of treatment, empowering women to prioritize their mental health and well-being during this transformative period. My goal is to support mothers in overcoming postpartum depression, strengthening maternal-infant bonds, and embracing the joys of motherhood with resilience and confidence.

New parenthood is often idealized as a joyful, magical time—but for many mothers and fathers, it brings unexpected waves of sadness, disconnection, or anxiety. You may feel emotionally flat, cry uncontrollably, or find it hard to bond with your baby. These experiences can be confusing and isolating, especially when the world expects you to feel nothing but joy. Therapy offers a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to tend to your emotional needs—so you can care for yourself even as you care for your child. You don’t have to suffer in silence or feel ashamed for struggling. Healing is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Postpartum

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with mothers in the months and years after birth who feel “off” in ways that others don’t always see. Many of the mothers I see look like they are managing from the outside, while feeling anything but okay on the inside. You may love your baby and still feel overwhelmed, numb, irritable, or not at home in your own life. Some have had medically complicated or frightening births, NICU stays, pregnancy or birth complications, or babies with ongoing medical needs. Others had births that looked fine from the outside, but something about the experience or the aftermath has left them feeling unlike themselves. Postpartum experiences can include persistent sadness or emptiness; anxiety, racing thoughts, or a sense of dread that does not match what is happening; intrusive thoughts or images, including fears about something happening to your baby; replaying the birth or hospital stay and wondering if you did something wrong; irritability or feeling on edge with your baby, partner, or other children; difficulty sleeping, eating, or caring for yourself even when you technically have the chance; feeling disconnected from your baby, your body, or the person you used to be; shame or guilt that you are not enjoying this time the way you thought you would; and loneliness even when you are rarely alone. For mothers whose babies had NICU stays or ongoing medical issues, there may also be ongoing vigilance and fear, medical trauma, and the sense that you never really got a chance to just be home with your baby. I have spent more than three decades sitting with women in the perinatal season, and I know how varied “postpartum” can be. In our work together, we slow things down and make room for your full experience without judgment. Your birth story, your mood, your fears, and your exhaustion are all welcome here. From there, we explore small, realistic shifts that help you feel more anchored, supported, and less alone in this season of your life. You do not have to be in crisis to reach out, or to prove that you are “struggling enough.” Feeling off, unlike yourself, or quietly overwhelmed is enough.

New York City, New York therapist: Marina Goldenberg, licensed mental health counselor
Postpartum

Marina Goldenberg

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, MA, LMHC
One in 5 mothers suffers from postpartum depression. Perinatal mental health conditions, which can occur in pregnancy, post-loss and postpartum, are the number one complication of childbearing. And the impact of these conditions isn’t always visible or obvious, but it undoubtedly affects the experience of motherhood, and also affects partners, family, friends, and children. While it can be scary to recognize that you’re struggling, especially in the face of all the messages we hear about what mothers *should* be, think, feel and do, if you are struggling, know that you are not alone, and that you deserve help and support. PMH conditions are treatable, and I use gentle empathy, humor and a hell of a lot of training and experience to help my perinatal clients cope with their symptoms, and discover who they want to be as they traverse the epic highs and devastating lows of what it means to be mothers.
