Giving birth and raising a child is one of the most significant adjustments any parent must make that requires us to accommodate ourselves to the presence of an infant/young child who is dependent on us. This can (and almost certainly does at times) feel desperate to the point that we don't know what to do. It is vital that we allow ourselves some degree of self-compassion to know and accept these overwhelming circumstance in order to reach out to others for support and guidance to help us through.

Kreins Psychological Services

Psychologist, PhD, PsyD
As a psychologist specializing in postpartum depression, my approach to treatment is compassionate, holistic, and tailored to the unique needs of new mothers. Through evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and support groups, I provide a safe space for women to express their feelings, explore the challenges of motherhood, and develop coping strategies. By addressing factors such as hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and social support, I help mothers navigate the complex emotions associated with postpartum depression. Additionally, I collaborate closely with healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care, including medication management when necessary. Psychoeducation about postpartum depression and self-care practices are also integral parts of treatment, empowering women to prioritize their mental health and well-being during this transformative period. My goal is to support mothers in overcoming postpartum depression, strengthening maternal-infant bonds, and embracing the joys of motherhood with resilience and confidence.

Brad provides trauma-informed therapy for postpartum depression and related perinatal mental health challenges, including postpartum anxiety, emotional overwhelm, identity shifts after childbirth, bonding difficulties, and the stress that can accompany early parenthood. These experiences can deeply affect emotional well-being, relationships, marriage dynamics, and overall family functioning. Brad takes a holistic and compassionate approach to postpartum mental health, helping clients navigate the emotional, psychological, and relational changes that often occur after childbirth. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to process feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability, guilt, disconnection, or exhaustion, while also addressing the underlying stressors and life adjustments that may be contributing to distress. As an experienced trauma therapist and EMDR therapist, Brad integrates EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), trauma-informed counseling, emotional regulation strategies, and holistic therapeutic approaches to support healing and recovery. Treatment focuses on reducing emotional distress, restoring balance, strengthening coping skills, and helping clients reconnect with themselves, their relationships, and their sense of purpose. Postpartum challenges often involve significant hormonal, emotional, and identity shifts, and they can be intensified by past trauma, lack of support, sleep deprivation, or ongoing stress. Brad’s approach helps clients explore both present-day stressors and deeper emotional patterns in order to support meaningful and lasting recovery. Therapy is collaborative, individualized, and focused on helping clients feel supported, understood, and empowered during this important life transition. The goal is not only symptom relief, but also helping clients rebuild emotional stability, confidence, and connection within themselves and their family system. Healing is possible. Being a parent is already hard enough and doesn’t come with an instruction manual. We often learn that we parent and teach our children the way we were brought up. We take a step back and look and sometimes say, well we didn’t turn out so bad even though we had trauma. But in reality, we are fighting against ourselves to break habits and change but find ourselves sometimes stuck in old ways. I am by no means the perfect parent and I have had to relearn how to parent my three children. I always feel extreme guilt because my oldest son who is now six had to endure the me that was struggling with trauma and I parented him that way. I often yelled and didn’t know how to handle meltdowns of his because I was never taught to regulate my emotions. His screaming made me spiral and it was like I just saw a black screen in my brain and everything went downhill with it. I used techniques I thought made sense that my mother used on me, but looking back they were awful and not at all affectionate, loving or beneficial for my son. I had to accept that I messed up but have made up for it by learning myself and getting in tune with my son. I changed the way I speak, or handle situations with my daughters and I feel parenthood has been easier (for what it can be with three wild children). I also had a mother who had total influence over my life and would interfere with how I would parent. For that reason and some others, I decided to cut ties with the relationship. Was it the hardest thing I had to do, yes… but by doing this my children are flourishing and this mama is free and can make her own decisions and feel good about them. You may have parents who are still in your life and have influence on how you raise your children. You could be turning to social media with unrealistic expectations which causes you to feel bad about yourself and ways of parenting. Or you may just be stuck in your ways and you want to change but you don’t know how. Trauma can be an all-encompassing construct that includes a spectrum of different experiences, we define trauma as abuse endured during childhood in terms of physical neglect or abuse, emotional neglect or abuse, and sexual abuse.

Bringing a new life into the world is often painted as a time of joy and fulfillment—but for many, it is also a time of overwhelming emotions, exhaustion, and self-doubt. If you’ve been feeling more anxious, numb, or hopeless than excited, you are not alone. Maybe you struggle with guilt over not feeling the way you think you "should," or you find yourself withdrawing from loved ones. Perhaps everyday tasks feel impossible, or waves of sadness and frustration leave you feeling unrecognizable to yourself. Postpartum depression is not a reflection of your love for your baby or your abilities as a parent—it is a real and treatable condition that many experience. Together, we will create a space where you can be honest about what you're going through, free from judgment. You deserve support, understanding, and the reassurance that you are not failing—you are adjusting to a profound life transition. With the right tools and care, it is possible to reconnect with yourself, find relief from the weight of depression, and move toward a place of balance and self-compassion.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Postpartum

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with mothers in the months and years after birth who feel “off” in ways that others don’t always see. Many of the mothers I see look like they are managing from the outside, while feeling anything but okay on the inside. You may love your baby and still feel overwhelmed, numb, irritable, or not at home in your own life. Some have had medically complicated or frightening births, NICU stays, pregnancy or birth complications, or babies with ongoing medical needs. Others had births that looked fine from the outside, but something about the experience or the aftermath has left them feeling unlike themselves. Postpartum experiences can include persistent sadness or emptiness; anxiety, racing thoughts, or a sense of dread that does not match what is happening; intrusive thoughts or images, including fears about something happening to your baby; replaying the birth or hospital stay and wondering if you did something wrong; irritability or feeling on edge with your baby, partner, or other children; difficulty sleeping, eating, or caring for yourself even when you technically have the chance; feeling disconnected from your baby, your body, or the person you used to be; shame or guilt that you are not enjoying this time the way you thought you would; and loneliness even when you are rarely alone. For mothers whose babies had NICU stays or ongoing medical issues, there may also be ongoing vigilance and fear, medical trauma, and the sense that you never really got a chance to just be home with your baby. I have spent more than three decades sitting with women in the perinatal season, and I know how varied “postpartum” can be. In our work together, we slow things down and make room for your full experience without judgment. Your birth story, your mood, your fears, and your exhaustion are all welcome here. From there, we explore small, realistic shifts that help you feel more anchored, supported, and less alone in this season of your life. You do not have to be in crisis to reach out, or to prove that you are “struggling enough.” Feeling off, unlike yourself, or quietly overwhelmed is enough.

Postpartum depression is more than the stress of becoming a new parent. This monumental transition into parenthood can awaken far more than new responsibilities, and the postpartum period may stir earlier life experiences, including attachment trauma, emotional overwhelm, and grief while also reshaping identity and relationships. PPD is a real and treatable condition that can affect mood, identity, bonding and attachment with your baby, and even your sense of yourself. Drawing from somatic and pre/perinatal psychology, therapy provides a compassionate, trauma-informed space to support healing and bonding, nervous system regulation, and help you reconnect with yourself and your baby at a pace that feels safe.
