Steph Paolucci

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, Registered Yoga Teacher
Poor self-esteem can make it challenging to live the life you want. It would be important to identify the reasons behind the low self-esteem and the mechanisms that have made it linger in you. The ultimate goal with me would be to reduce the negative self-talk that can occur on a daily basis. Challenging and fostering more positive opinions of self can increase self-compassion, which makes a tremendous difference in how one feels on a day-to-day basis. I would help you develop and practice techniques that increase your self-love and acceptance of self, ultimately working towards an increased self-esteem.

My approach, relational therapy, sees self-esteem as shaped by our experiences with others. How we're treated in relationships, past and present, deeply effects how we feel about ourselves. You don't need to have traumatic experiences to have impacted your self esteem; sometimes well-meaning and loving relationships still don't happen give us what we needed to be more positively connected to ourselves. How we're valued or not in society also matters: even if we know they're wrong, experiences of discrimination and prejudice can become internalized, leaving a mark on our self-image. I'll work with you to try to understand the unique relational world you carry, and what experiences of connection, love, validation, and acceptance you may need to support a better self esteem. My hope is that you leave therapy with new narratives, feeling more empowered and compassionate towards yourself. Some of my clients want to revisit and reprocess past, impactful experiences that haunt their self-image. Others would rather focus on present experiences—how do self esteem issues come up in daily life now? How are they feeling in the session? Some want to explicitly discuss issues of internalized racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism, homophobia, etc. Others may not think through an identity lens, and that's okay too! My approach is client-led, so I'm always flexible to whether or not, and how deeply, you want to discuss something. So much of therapy is about finding your authentic voice, and my process always seeks to honour that.

Self-esteem isn’t about false confidence—it’s about knowing and trusting yourself. My approach blends mindfulness, depth psychology, and somatic awareness to uncover the unconscious beliefs and past experiences that shape your self-worth. Rather than relying on external validation, we explore how to cultivate an inner foundation of confidence, resilience, and self-acceptance. Whether you struggle with self-doubt, perfectionism, or feeling "not enough," therapy provides a space to reconnect with your authentic self and develop a deeper sense of inner strength.

Lack of self-esteem is probably the most common by-product of the modern society in which an individual is considered the sole architect of one’s life. To improve self-esteem, one has to understand the gap between the ideal and the real. In psychotherapy, one has to realize the degree to which these ideals can be converged and, sometimes, with the help of the therapist, the client understands that this ideal is not their ideal, but a projection caused by family, society, culture, etc. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit.

Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. It's based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which can feel challenging to change. We might also think of this as self-confidence. Your self-esteem can affect whether you: Like and value yourself. When your self-esteem and self-value are low, you may need some guidance and support to steer you back onto the right path where you can regain a sense of self-confidence and well being.

Lexi Gayne Psychotherapy

Registered Psychotherapist, RP
If the loudest voice in your head is also your most relentless critic, I want you to hear this loud and clear: that voice is feeding you your greatest fears, it's not actually true. When an internal narrative constantly insists you aren't good enough or worthy of what you want, it fuels an exhausting cycle of chronic people-pleasing, second-guessing your every move, and an inability to ever just feel satisfied. In our sessions, we will gently unpack where that harsh critic actually came from. Together, we will build the practical tools to challenge and reframe those deeply ingrained, unhelpful thoughts. You absolutely deserve to feel a genuine sense of pride in who you are, to deeply trust your own decisions, and to confidently pursue the life you actually want without your own mind standing in the way.

One of the most common difficulties that my clients experience is around self esteem. Having low self esteem can be debilitating and a barrier to growth for adults and young people. I work to help my clients figure out the source of their low self esteem and also to remember the strengths that they already have.
