How you perceive and feel about yourself is a key indicator of how happy and emotionally stable you are. You may be feeling insecure, critical, helpless, incompetent or unlovable. I work with clients to explore the root of these beliefs and challenge them. This allows my clients to unlearn thoughts and beliefs that are harmful and limiting while learning to genuinely love and appreciate themselves and the value that they bring to the world. Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Gestalt Psychotherapist Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Gottman Trained Couples Therapist
I have borrowed Andrew Seuber's approach to working with a negative body image, that is from the inside out. He suggests that "The negative image is understood as a dissociated and shame-based “part” of the personality in need of understanding and compassion, achieved via mindful awareness, “parts” dialogue and trauma processing. The first step is to create healthy separation between the "observing" or aware Self and the part(s) absorbed in the eating disorder via mindful awareness. Once this separation between the "whole" self and part of self is established, the Gestalt polarity tradition (empty chairs) is utilized to develop understanding of the shame-based part. Understanding leads to compassion for the eating disordered part from a non-enmeshed state of consciousness, aka the aware self, the experiencing self, the observing self. Healing of the eating disordered part occurs when that part no longer feels exiled as a "not-I" and is assisted in processing the traumatic roots of the disorder."

Kristen See

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, RP
Often negative body image and body dysmorphia are rooted in deeper, unresolved concerns such as trauma and/or neurodivergence. Unfortunately, the body often becomes a convenient "punching bag" when we lack the ability to regulate our thoughts, feelings, and behaviour; for some, the body is viewed as something we can control in lieu of having control in other areas of life. In session, we can explore the root cause of your anxiety or shame and work towards improved self-esteem and body neutrality, if not body acceptance. My approach is anti-diet culture and informed by years of research on fat-phobia.

Do thoughts about your body shape how you see yourself or move through the world? You may feel preoccupied with your appearance, critical of how you look, or disconnected from your body — even when others don’t notice the same things. These experiences can quietly affect confidence, relationships, and day-to-day comfort in your own skin. You might find yourself fixating on specific body parts, comparing yourself to others, avoiding mirrors or photos, or feeling uncomfortable being seen or noticed. Over time, your sense of worth may start to feel closely tied to appearance. Body image struggles often reflect deeper experiences around safety, belonging, and self-worth. Therapy can help unpack these layers and support a more compassionate, trusting relationship with your body beyond appearance alone.

Body Image is our feelings and thoughts regarding how we look. A healthy or unhealthy body image is independent of how one actually looks. It’s often affected by media, culture, upbringing and social circles. I work with my clients on understanding the reasons behind having an unhealthy self-image while gaining awareness on what a healthy body image looks like and working towards acquiring a healthier perspective.

Registered Psychotherapist, RP (qualifying), MA-ExAT
Body image challenges often live not only in our thoughts, but in how we experience our bodies. They can show up as tension, disconnection, self-criticism, or a sense of not feeling at home in one’s body. Approaches like art therapy and sensorimotor therapy gently engage both body and mind, supporting reconnection with physical sensations, cultivating self-compassion, and fostering a more grounded, accepting, and respectful relationship with the body.

Rather than aiming for "body positivity" immediately—which can sometimes feel out of reach—I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to move toward body neutrality. I help clients use mindfulness to observe critical thoughts without being defined by them and employs self-compassion to quiet the inner critic. By identifying personal values that exist outside of physical appearance, my goal is to empower my clients to treat their bodies with respect and care, reclaiming their energy for the things in life that truly bring them fulfillment.

It can be really difficult to have a great relationship with your body when we constantly receive messages from our families, society, and the media about how we are "supposed" to look. Not liking the way you look can negatively impact your daily life as well as your self-esteem. I am curious about the things you like about your body, and work collaboratively with clients to explore and challenge narratives of how bodies "should" look, while highlighting ways to invite more self-love and self-compassion into your life.
