Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) is a term used to describe a number of ongoing repetitive self-grooming behaviours (including hair-pulling - Trichotillomania, skin-picking – Excoriation Disorder/Dermatillomania, nail-biting, teeth-grinding) that can cause lots of distress (e.g., shame, isolation) and impairment (e.g., avoidance of social situations, missed school, pain, hair loss) despite efforts to try and stop these behaviours.BFRBs are not simple habits that are easy to just stop if one tries hard enough. Seeking a specialized therapist is often needed to learn management and coping skills.
BFRBs are thought to be more common than once believed, affecting at least 2-5% of the general population. Unfortunately, despite being widespread, few doctors are aware of how to effectively treat these disorders leaving many individuals and their families confused and frightened about where to begin. Fortunately, at MindFit, we have treatment experts that offer comprehensive assessments as well as specialized and effective treatments for BFRBs.
MindFit’s approach to treating BFRBs involves (generally) a 10 session weekly Habit Busters program based on the Comprehensive Behavioural (ComB) treatment for BFRBs and involved additional components including Habit Reversal Training (which includes awareness training, competing response training, and social support), stimulus control procedures (considering environmental changes that make it harder to pick, pull etc.), distress tolerance and mindfulness strategies, and cognitive behavioural therapy (which includes addressing maladaptive/unhelpful thoughts that may contribute to pulling as well as that may impact her sense of confidence). The program is followed by biweekly to monthly booster sessions to help maintain gains. Handouts are sent ahead of each session and participants graduate from the program with a toolbox of strategies to manage BFRBs.

Rebecca Goldstein, TuneinTherapy, ADHD | Trauma | Autism
Registered Social Worker, RSW, MSW, MTA, BMT, FAMI
Impulsivity is often about far more than simply “making bad choices.” It can be connected to ADHD, trauma, emotional overwhelm, unmet needs, nervous system dysregulation, mood shifts, or struggling to pause before acting when emotions run high.
For many people, impulsive behaviors develop for a reason — as coping, stimulation, relief, or survival — even when they later create shame, regret, or consequences.
My approach is compassionate, practical, and focused on understanding what is driving the behavior beneath the surface. Together, we work on building self-awareness, emotional regulation, and realistic strategies that strengthen self-trust and help create more intentional choices without relying on shame.

MJB Wellness LLC
Hypnotherapist, Certified Hypnotherapist and Coach, Certified Sexological Bodyworker, Sex Educator, Certified Reiki
Impulse control is a big topic that encompasses many things such as binge eating, anger management issues, drug and alcohol abuse, self harm, anxiety, and much more. All are the result of emotional triggers that set off the behavior and often the client doesn't realize what initiates the negative response. The first thing is to uncover exactly what it is that triggers the problem behavior and then neutralize the trigger or provide a positive trigger in its place. Often, simply understanding what starts the unwanted response goes a long way towards change. This is, again, one of the bread and butter issues that hypnotherapists successfully deal with every day.c

Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), C.S.P.S.S
Life can feel overwhelming when you’re carrying the weight of an impulse control disorder on your own. My goal is to support you as I genuinely feel that everyone holds their own map to healing, however, many often need help navigating their path forward. Whether you’re also working on trauma recovery, healing from abuse, or working through the stages of grief, you don’t have to go through it alone. I am grateful to be that source of support for current and new clients. I help people create, enforce, and maintain boundaries that may have once felt impossible to implement, giving them space to feel safer, more empowered, and more connected to themselves and others. I work from an eclectic approach, believing there is no one-size-fits-all path to therapy. Together we can help you break free from limiting patterns and beliefs.

Selah Counselling, Mediation, and Training Center
Registered Social Worker, BSW, MSW, RSW
If you struggle with impulse control, you may find yourself acting quickly in ways you later regret. Whether it is spending, gambling, explosive reactions, sexual behaviours, or other urges, the pull can feel intense and immediate. You may promise yourself it will not happen again, only to feel caught in the same cycle. Over time, this can lead to shame, damaged relationships, and a loss of confidence in your own self-control.
At Selah Counselling, we approach impulse control disorders with compassion and structure. Impulsivity is often connected to nervous system dysregulation, unmet emotional needs, trauma, or difficulty tolerating distress. Together, we work to slow the cycle down. We strengthen awareness of triggers, build distress tolerance skills, and develop practical strategies that increase pause and choice. Our goal is not simply to stop behaviours, but to help you understand what is driving them and to build the internal steadiness that supports lasting change. You can learn to respond intentionally rather than impulsively.

Sexual addiction is often referred to as a disorder of sexual compulsivity. Despite a person's best efforts to curb or stop sexual behaviours (usually in secrecy) they lack the internal control to refrain. This has been a growing field of addiction, especially with the advent of the internet and ease of access to pornography.
