Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Marietta, Georgia therapist: Cheryl Boucher, licensed professional counselor
Chronic Pain

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC
Pain Reprocessing Therapy offers hope for people who feel trapped by chronic pain and exhausted from searching for answers. It helps you understand how the brain and nervous system can keep pain going, even when injuries have healed, and teaches you how to retrain your brain’s response to pain. As you begin to calm the brain’s pain alarm system, it becomes possible to relate to your symptoms with less anxiety and greater confidence and trust that your body is okay. For many people, this work creates space for real change, less suffering, more freedom, and the chance to recover the life pain has taken from you.

As a psychologist specializing in chronic pain and illness, my treatment approach focuses on addressing the psychological, emotional, and social aspects of living with ongoing physical symptoms. Living with chronic pain or a chronic illness can be incredibly draining, not just physically, but emotionally too. It’s hard carrying the stress of symptoms, appointments, fatigue, and the feeling that life takes so much more effort than it seems to for everyone else. Many people also struggle with anxiety, frustration, grief, isolation, or feeling misunderstood by those around them. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to minimize what you’re going through or hold it all together alone. Together, we focus on finding support, coping tools, self-compassion, and ways to make life feel a little lighter, more manageable, and more supportive of your needs.

Raleigh, North Carolina therapist: Nour Counseling, counselor/therapist
Chronic Pain

Nour Counseling

Counselor/Therapist
Living with chronic pain or illness is not just a physical experience—it impacts your energy, your identity, your relationships, and how you move through daily life. Many people find themselves navigating medical systems that feel dismissive, confusing, or exhausting, while also trying to keep up with responsibilities that don’t adjust to their reality. There can be grief, frustration, isolation, and the ongoing pressure to “push through,” even when your body is asking for something different. Cultural beliefs about health, productivity, and worth can make this even harder, especially when your experience is minimized or not fully understood. At Nour Counseling, we take your experience seriously. We work with you to understand how chronic pain or illness is affecting you—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally—and help you build ways of coping that are actually sustainable. This might include pacing, boundary-setting, navigating medical interactions, managing uncertainty, and finding ways to stay connected to yourself and your life even within limitations. We also make space for the systemic and cultural factors that shape your experience, so you’re not carrying that context alone. This work is about supporting you in creating a life that feels more manageable, more aligned, and more compassionate toward your body as it is.
