Chronic Pain

Dr. Jenny Shields

Psychologist
You’ve been told it’s “just stress,” that “your labs look fine,” or that maybe it’s “all in your head.” But deep down, you know something’s not right. Living with chronic pain or illness—especially when it’s invisible to others—can feel both physically exhausting and emotionally isolating. Maybe you’re grieving the life you once had, constantly justifying your experience to people who don’t understand, or quietly wondering if you’re just supposed to push through. Dr. Jenny Shields offers something different: a space where you don’t have to prove your pain to be taken seriously. With warmth, respect, and clinical expertise, Dr. Shields works with people navigating the complex realities of illness—whether you’ve recently received a diagnosis, are stuck in a cycle of uncertainty, or have been managing symptoms for years. Drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based tools, and trauma-informed care, she helps you move through grief, frustration, and fear with compassion. Together, you’ll explore how to live a meaningful life in a body that doesn’t always cooperate—on your own terms.

Understanding that chronic pain and illness affect not just the body but also the mind and spirit, we provide empathetic, holistic care designed to improve quality of life, enhance coping strategies, and foster resilience and hope. Compassionate Support for Managing Chronic Conditions * Holistic Approach: We recognize that chronic pain and illness can touch every aspect of life—physical, emotional, and social. Our strategies are comprehensive, addressing not just the symptoms but the whole person. * Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is particularly effective in helping clients manage the impacts of living with chronic conditions, such as coping with pain, dealing with anxiety or depression, and adjusting lifestyle changes. * Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporating mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation techniques can aid in reducing the stress response, which is often exacerbated in chronic conditions, and can help manage pain levels more effectively. * Pain Management Education: We provide education on pain management techniques and the relationship between emotional states and physical pain, empowering clients with knowledge and tools to better control their symptoms. * Support Groups: Facilitating access to support groups and community resources, allowing clients to connect with others who share similar experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. Goals of Counseling for Chronic Pain or Illness Our aims in providing counseling for chronic pain or illness include: * Enhanced Quality of Life: Support clients in finding joy and satisfaction in life despite the challenges of their condition. * Effective Coping Strategies: Develop and reinforce coping mechanisms for dealing with both the physical symptoms and emotional stress of chronic conditions. * Emotional Resilience: Foster emotional resilience, helping clients to adjust to their situation, deal with feelings of grief or loss, and cultivate a hopeful, positive outlook. * Improved Self-Care: Encourage practices and routines that promote physical health, mental wellbeing, and self-compassion. * Strengthened Autonomy: Empower individuals to take control over their lives and make informed decisions about their care, reinforcing their sense of autonomy and independence. Our counseling services aim to provide a nurturing space where you can find the support, strategies, and strength to navigate your journey with dignity, courage, and hope. For individuals with invisible chronic illnesses, hiding your pain all the time becomes exhausting. With a chronic health issue, you don’t get to choose when you’re in pain and when you’re not, and as such, I keep my cancellation policy flexible so that I can best support you. There is often a great deal of shame surrounding chronic illness, and significant stigma as well, both from the medical community and society at large. This can lead to depression and anxiety, both medical anxiety and social anxiety. I want to work with you to ensure that your chronic illness does not completely shape your mental health. As someone who suffers from a chronic pain condition, I am understanding and aware of the unique challenges that diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, Ehlers-Danlos, Dysautonomia, arthritis, and cancer have on an individual’s personal, romantic, and professional life. My goal is to help each patient understand and accept these diagnoses and work together to manage both the physical symptoms as well as the mental turmoil that can occur while trying to live life in an able-bodied world.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

People mean well, but they just don't get it. From the folks who "helpfully" suggest you try yoga and tea tree oil to the folks who absolutely refuse to acknowledge the elephant in the room, you find yourself working twice as hard, first to manage your pain and condition, and second to make sure you aren't bothering the people around you. This goes double if you have an invisible disability. I get it. Let's give you a space where you can unmask. A space where you can be you without having to worry about bothering people, complaining too much, being too graphic. I've heard it all. Let's build a space together where we can look at some of the underlying psychology to give you tools to help build the life you want to be living.

I have made Chronic Illness and Pain a specialty in my practice and I have trained with some of the leading experts in that area. I have worked with many chronic pain sufferers, often eliminating all their pain even when it has been a long standing problem. As far as illnesses go, I have been able to eliminate all the symptoms of a client who was suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative neurological condition related to ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. When I first met him, he had been degenerating for 12 years, was confined to a wheelchair, could no longer speak, drooled constantly, suffered from tremors and repetitive movements, inability to sleep and he lacked motivation to do his physical therapy, the only treatment doctors could offer him. With no treatment or drugs for his condition, doctors expected him to die soon most likely from choking as he lost control of his swallowing. After one session, we stopped the tremors and repetitive movements, got him to sleep more soundly and do his PT. After a second session he was able to speak again and walk again. After 5 sessions one couldn't even tell he was sick and now 6 years later he is still gardening, walking his dog, hiking in the mountains. Soon after I worked with a gentleman who had developed an adult onset form of Muscular Dystrophy called Myotonic Dystrophy. Only 45 years old, he suffered from severe chronic fatigue, finding himself unable to get out of bed in the morning, taking hours to stand up. He had muscular pain and rigidity, painful joints and various digestive issues. The morning after our first session, he woke up full of energy and jumped out of bed. After a few more sessions we eliminated all his physical symptoms as well as clearing several emotional issues that had plagued him his whole life. Recently he contacted me to update me and report his still feeling good. I have also worked with clients with MS and Parkinsons> This past year I trained and certified in treating IBS and other gut conditions, learning a protocol which is considered the most effective treatment for these issues. I have also trained and certified in Hypno-Oncology, enabling me to support patients on their Cancer journey to deal with pain, anxiety, and the effects of treatment such as nausea. Recently, I worked with a woman with stage 4 lung Cancer. Her only hope was a new experimental protocol that involved a long needle inserted into the stomach. She had a lifelong needle phobia and was terrified. After the first grueling treatment she came home and cried and vomited for 3 days. After one session she went in for her second treatment and she was able to laugh and sing show tunes with the nurses throughout the treatment, felt no pain and went home calm and relaxed.
