Adolescents and adults navigating their faith and sexuality (LGBTQ+ affirming), anxiety, depression, interpersonal challenges, grief, trauma, pregnancy/postpartum, family of origin concerns, identity development, and general life stressors and transitions would particular enjoy working with me. Multicultural couples and families navigating culture clashes, estrangement, faith transitions, and sexual and intergenerational trauma, especially for BIPOC populations, are treatment specialties. Psychedelic psychotherapy preparation and integration are also available with referrals to clinics and others who can provide medication administration. Psychological assessment to clarify diagnoses such as autism, bipolar disorder, ADHD, etc., Independent Medical Evaluations (IME), worker’s compensation, preemployment for first responders, and fitness-for-duty-evaluations are also offered. Approaching patients with cultural humility is a core value at Malak Psychology honoring who you are, your ancestors, and the indigenous land we occupy. Grounded in decolonizing mental health, liberation, and feminist psychologies, my practice employs multimodal approaches, including dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, cognitive processing therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, somatic experiencing, emotionally focused couples therapy, Gottman, family systems, psychoanalysis, and more. Empowering you to forge your unique path, I serve as a guide with an emphasis on agency and self-determination. Telehealth psychology support for life adjustments, trauma, relationships, and body issues. With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy in the comfort and privacy of your own home and have continuity of care when you travel. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons. You may be located abroad or be a professional who travels, telehealth allows you to get the support and resources and meet you where your life is at. While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions. I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting. Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be. If you are not tech-savvy or anxious about using technology, I'll make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use, and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns. A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children, and/or family members or roommates. Please plan this out in advance so you have quiet and privacy during your session. Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session. Headphones or AirPods can often make audio clearer or provide more privacy, but are not necessary. Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, connect from wherever you may be, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are. You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.

Washington, Washington, D.C. therapist: Erica Hart, psychologist
Feminist

Erica Hart

Psychologist, PhD in Clinical Psychology
I work collaboratively with my clients to honor who they are, help make sense of their emotional responses to daily experiences, and guide them to become more authentic in their relationships. My approach is nonjudgmental, reflective and oftentimes playful. During our sessions, I help clients make connections between current problems and past struggles. Understanding these patterns builds self-awareness and helps create more adaptive ways of coping with stress and relating to others. I have been trained in Humanistic/Existential, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and draw upon these approaches to best respond to my client's concerns, goals and disposition. I specialize in working with clients struggling with life transitions, including changes in roles or identity, and shifts in relationships. These moments in one's life frequently result in a mix of anxiety and depression, but can be crucial times for self-reflection and growth. I support my clients through individual therapy and couples counseling.

Milwaukee is one of the most racially segregated cities in the United States, and the mental health effects of systemic inequality, concentrated poverty, and community violence disproportionately affect its Black residents — driving demand for culturally affirming and trauma-informed therapists. The city has a strong Polish, German, and working-class heritage in many of its neighborhoods, and therapists frequently address intergenerational family dynamics, addiction, and depression tied to economic stress. Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin provide major institutional mental health resources alongside community-based providers. Milwaukee's proximity to Chicago means some residents also access care in the broader metro corridor.
