What if substance use and addiction are symptoms of sensitivity to anxiety in and around a family? That's the question that Bowen Family Systems Theory poses and that I explore with clients who want to work with me on breaking patterns of addiction. Recovery programs can be excellent ways of addressing the symptom that is addiction through the (much needed) symptom-reducing fix of sobriety. Long-term recovery requires addressing root causes of the disease, however, which involves understanding the sources of anxiety in a family system, the patterned ways the individuals in the family react to anxiety, and experimenting with alternate, more thoughtful, principle-driven ways of managing oneself in the system and towards one's own reactivity. That's where I come in: I aim to ask thoughtful questions to help stimulate and clarify your thinking about all that so you can find different ways of managing Self to "live life on life's terms."
