Trauma and PTSD

Jayne Batten

Counsellor/Therapist, MSc, CT, RPC, MPCC
Trauma is the emotional wound that is created in response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event such as the loss of a loved one, or perhaps suffering an accident, abuse or surviving a natural disaster. Equally trauma can result from the drip, drip, drip of negative or abusive circumstances outside our control, that impact our sense of safety, trust and ‘okay-ness’ in the world around us. The emotional impact of trauma can result in long term physical and mental symptoms that make it difficult to function in our everyday lives. It wreaks havoc with our relationships with others. Depression and anxiety very often result from the experience of trauma. Talking therapy can help us to validate our experiences and the feelings, or denial of feelings, that go hand in hand with trauma. In time we can hopefully reframe what causes us to suffer and develop skills to cope, so that we can move forward in our lives.

Calgary, Alberta therapist: Elliott Kemmet, counselor/therapist
Trauma and PTSD

Elliott Kemmet

Counsellor/Therapist, MSW, BSW, RSW
In my trauma and PTSD counseling, I provide a secure and compassionate setting where individuals can address and heal from the profound impacts of traumatic experiences. Understanding that trauma affects both the mind and body, I guide clients through the process of identifying and processing traumatic memories, reducing the intensity of emotional and physical responses associated with these events. My approach is gentle and empathetic, focusing on empowering clients with effective coping mechanisms and resilience-building strategies. We work together to create a path toward healing that respects each individual's pace and emotional capacity. This therapeutic journey aims to restore a sense of control, peace, and well-being, allowing clients to reclaim their lives and move forward with renewed purpose and strength.

Calgary, Alberta therapist: Amy Sheffield, psychologist
Trauma and PTSD

Amy Sheffield

Psychologist, Mc(Psych), Registered Psychologist
Trauma can be the catalyst for any mental health concern that impedes our ability to live our best life. Often when trauma is discussed we immediately think of experiences related to bodily harm including childhood abuse, violence, warfare, serious accidents and sexual assault. However, trauma can also refer to incidents that do not threaten one’s physical life but still disrupt emotional functioning. Examples include divorce, interpersonal conflict, infertility, financial loss, infidelity and legal trouble. I decided to obtain specialized training in trauma when I realized how frequently it was impacting peoples’ ability to be their best selves. People would often tell me that they “knew” cognitively that their thinking post trauma was impeding their progress. However, simply changing their thoughts was failing to change the physiological response their body was having in situations that triggered their trauma related memories. I therefore decided to pursue training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) and ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) to help people achieve peaceful congruency between their mind and body post trauma.
