Tangled Minds Psychotherapy

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, RP, RCC
Anxiety is a normal part of the human experience, but it becomes a disorder when it begins to dictate how we live. We often find ourselves trapped in patterns of avoidance - changing our behaviors at work, with friends, or in our relationships just to escape uncomfortable feelings. When these patterns start shrinking your world, professional treatment becomes vital to help you reclaim your life. Anxiety is a mismatch between our ancient "mid-brain" and our modern "pre-frontal cortex." Your brain’s threat detection system (the amygdala) is millions of years old and cannot always distinguish between a physical predator and an imagined catastrophe. When we visualize a stressful scenario, our body responds with a flood of adrenaline and cortisol as if the threat were real. This "evolutionary glitch" traps us in a loop where our brilliant imagination accidentally keeps our survival system in a state of constant, exhausting vigilance. My approach to treatment targets the four stages of the anxiety response: Stimulus, Emotion, Cognition, and Behavior. We work to "down-regulate" your nervous system through physiological tools like structured breathing and sensory grounding. By strengthening your executive function through mindfulness, we build the "mental muscle" necessary to catch an anxiety spiral in real-time, allowing you to choose a new direction rather than falling back into old habits. Effective therapy involves more than just insight; it requires action. We use Exposure Therapy and goal-setting to gradually face the things you’ve been avoiding, proving to your brain that you are capable of handling discomfort. We also integrate Self-Compassion and Mentalization to help you sit with difficult emotions without needing to "fix" or flee from them. By targeting thoughts, emotions, and behaviors simultaneously, we move away from short-term avoidance and toward a long-term, value-driven life. Recovery from an anxiety disorder is significant work that involves re-patterning how your brain responds to stress. My role is to be your guide—teaching you the skills, helping you navigate the predictable pitfalls, and providing a safe space to process the roots of your pain. While there are no overnight fixes, these evidence-based interventions offer a clear, reliable path toward a life that is no longer defined by fear.

Therapist, Registered Clinical Counsellor
Anxiety and depression can cause or worsen insomnia. But it's important to know that insomnia is often the CAUSE of (or at least a contributor to) anxiety and depression. Gaining concrete strategies to improve all the factors impacting sleep can go a long way to ending the vicious cycle of chronic insomnia. I also love helping people with anxiety, whether it's sleep-related or not - for example, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, health anxiety - and of course the anxiety about sleep that's like pouring fuel on the flame.

Counsellor/Therapist, MA, RCC
You want to feel calm and safe. You want to trust that everything will be ok. But it's so hard. It all feels so overwhelming. Part of you feels like you have to stay anxious and on edge, to keep yourself safe. I see you, I've been there. In fact, I still have those parts too. But they're much quieter now, and they show up less frequently. Having someone there to hold space with you while you feel whatever is present, without judgement, without trying to push away or fix your fears, is what I offer you. Let's look at your shadows together, and see that maybe they just want to be loved, too.

Kim Alscher

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, RCC
Anxiety can appear as paralysis, persistent overwhelm, spiralling thoughts, or ongoing physical tension. Because chronic activation of the nervous system affects health and wellbeing, it’s important to address it effectively. I combine CBT and PRT strategies with a deeper exploration of the underlying fear response so clients can understand, regulate, and ultimately reduce their anxiety.

Counsellor/Therapist, MA, RCC, CCC
Anxiety can be debilitating and disruptive leaving an individual feeling confused, vulnerable, and frustrated. Although experiencing a certain level anxiety is natural and an adaptive response in our nervous system to keep us safe, it becomes maladaptive when in overdrive. Understanding the neurobiology behind anxiety and the events that trigger it is critical to treatment. Therapy includes a deep exploration of how anxiety developed, how it is keeping you safe, and coping strategies that may be useful to manage high levels of anxiety. Psychoeducation on the neurobiology behind the stress response provides a deep understanding of how stress impacts the nervous system. In our sessions, I will support you in exploring your thoughts, emotions such as fear, sadness, and anger as well as triggers that lead to heightened levels of anxiety. Exploring earlier experiences and trauma that may have led to the development of negative beliefs and may be fueling negative automatic thoughts can help determine the root cause of anxiety to break dysfunctional thinking patterns. When dealing with anxiety, improving one’s self-concept and self efficacy can be an empowering and liberating process.
