Elinor Nygren Szapiro
Licensed Professional Counselor, MA LPC, EMDR II, Brainspotting Certification, Hypnotherapy
I know what it's like to live with chronic illness, as I have been living with chronic illness myself for over 30 years. Of course, each of our experiences are unique, but living with physical challenges is so much more common than one might think. Ironically, though, in our culture, there can be a stigma or embarrassment to living with illness or pain, which can add to our difficulty. Fortunately, though, it's possible to learn to connect with a part of ourselves that is still "okay", that actually is "always okay", even though our physical bodies are struggling. Then, illness can be a doorway to connecting with our "innate wholeness", to a part of ourselves that is neither sick nor healthy, but rather something beyond them both. That is the pathway I've chosen to work with in myself and would be happy to share with other people dealing with chronic illness. I offer online and phone sessions, which can be particularly appealing for people who find it difficult to travel or prefer the comfort of their own space.

I've worked with folks with chronic pains and illnesses. I am not currently disabled but have done a lot of advocacy work and research to understand how chronic pain/illness can impact every facet of our lives. I'm here to help find solutions, or to just listen to the frustrations you have while you go through the medical system. Part of my values is to advocate for clients where I can, we can discuss this more in-person as well.

Jamie Andersen, M.A., LMFT
Marriage and Family Therapist, Woodland Counseling
Chronic pain can rob you of an enjoyable quality of life. Chronic pain can lead to symptoms of depression and helplessness. There is a body-mind connection. Science has begun to recognize that there is a connection between our physical and mental health. Emotional, physical, spiritual and behavioral factors can affect your health. Emotions and thought patterns contribute to imbalances in the body and therapies like mindfulness, meditation, and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization) can be used to rebalance and promote physical and mental health. The perception of pain is in your brain so you can affect your pain level by challenging the thoughts and behaviors that support it.

I believe that in order to be fully supported with chronic pain or illness you need to feel respected, heard, and understood by me and your medical providers. My approach works to identify and process the underlying emotions that often come with these experiences (grief, loss etc) that often come with these experiences. My hope is that by working together you won't feel alone while touching the depths of these emotions, while I gently guide you through them by helping you identify psychological and physical tools to help with coping and/or healing.
