They may not look like it but they often are. The people that are close to them are typically in pain as well. And often confused and overwhelmed. My past training and experience has made me able to work with the complexity inherent in these issues and to work with both the severe and more mild presentations. And with people who are in relationship with them. Narcissists are not a monolith and again there is no substitute for solid understanding and long term clinical experience.

There is unfortunately a great deal of misinformation about NPD in the media and online. It is also frequently misdiagnosed for other conditions. I have experience both assessing and treating NPD. In terms of assessment, I use reliable clinical instruments (i.e., those used in clinical trials) to establish/rule out this diagnosis. For therapy, I apply several forms of contemporary psychodynamic therapies shown to be helpful in treating personality disorders (i.e., Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, Supportive-Expressive Therapy, and Mentalization-Based Treatment). I have published professional works (i.e., articles and a book) on psychodynamic therapy as well.
