Depression can make it so that you can not fathom even taking a shower and getting dressed to drive to that counselling session that you scheduled...so you cancel, again. If this sounds familiar, trying phone or video counselling may be the best start. I've had many clients that have said, if they had to get up and dressed they would have cancelled, but since they could just call me, they could manage the session. The first step in therapy is attending the session - give me a call and lets see where we can get to from there.

Trudi Jane Wyatt

Counsellor/Therapist, MA, RP, CT, CCC, CCTP
Have you been feeling more sad lately (or sad for a long time), or having some negative evaluations about yourself or others or the world/universe in general, or feeling unmotivated to get up and do things? These are some things people experience when they might be labelled or referred to as “depressed” and are common and very understandable experiences such as when life seems very dreary or difficult, and such as when there has been so much social isolation. If this sounds like you, know that you are not alone in your struggle, and that for these experiences, there are people and strategies that can help improve your mood. Many clients find relief in realizing that their struggle does not own them and that there are options available to once again have hope for a life with more joy and fulfillment. If you are hoping to feel more like like yourself again — or to finally feel like yourself — I would be happy to meet with you and help you start to develop a plan in that direction.

I was trained in IPT at the Centre of Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, at the Department of Psychiatry University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and in Group IPT at McMaster University Department of Psychiatry School of Medicine. I trained and supervised Psychology Interns, Psychiatry Residents and Social Work Students in Interpersonal Psychotherapy. IPT is a method of treating depression and is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on you and your relationships with other people. It's based on the idea that personal relationships are at the center of psychological problems. Depression often follows changes in one’s interpersonal environment (e.g., struggle with a significant other, loss of a loved one, life transitions such as divorce, job loss, postpartum or inability to maintain or develop social connections). Once depressed, symptoms can lead to compromised interpersonal functioning, which can precipitate continued stressful events. The goal in therapy is to address both the stressful life events and improved social support. IPT focuses on improving problematic interpersonal relationships or circumstances that are directly related to the current depressive episode.

Psychotherapy can be like a light shining onto the dark night of depression. Specific situations may cause us to feel sad and lethargic. Sometimes our feelings are ’stuck’ and need to be expressed. Depression can also be organic in nature and may need to be supported by medical interventions such as anti-depressants. Both of these treatments can be effective in the healing process of depression.

Depression is a pervasive mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities. It goes beyond typical mood fluctuations and can significantly impact daily functioning, affecting sleep, appetite, and energy levels. Individuals experiencing depression may grapple with negative thoughts, low self-esteem, and difficulty concentrating. It is a complex condition with various contributing factors, including biological, psychological, and environmental elements. Seeking professional help, such as therapy or medication, can be crucial in managing depression. With proper support, individuals can work towards understanding the underlying causes, developing coping strategies, and gradually reclaiming a sense of well-being and purpose in their lives.
