From an emotionally focused perspective, working with social anxiety involves exploring the emotional experiences underlying an individual's fear of social situations. Social anxiety may stem from attachment-related insecurities that leave us vulnerable to feelings of rejection or judgment. Taking an emotionally focused approach our goal is to identify and process these underlying emotions, which may include shame or fear of abandonment, that often fuel such anxiety. By creating a safe, empathic therapeutic environment, we will also work on becoming aware of any negative emotional cycles, like avoidance or self-criticism and work to heal these wounds and soften our defenses. As individuals connect more deeply with their core emotions and gain more clarity about their internal world it can lead to increased self-acceptance which enables individuals to face social situations with a sense of security, reduced anxiety and an improved ability to engage with others in an authentic way.
