You may be used to carrying a lot- for work, for others, for yourself. Perhaps you're a frontline worker or helping professional who has spent years absorbing difficult stories and heavy experiences. On the outside, you manage. Underneath, you feel exhausted, anxious, disconnected, and going through the motions while feeling disconnected from yourself and the things that once brought you joy. I work with adults navigating trauma, PTSD, and the lingering effects of difficult experiences. My approach is trauma-informed, somatic, and collaborative. Together, we'll explore what's been weighing on you, understand your patterns, and develop tools to help you feel more present and resilient. As a Registered Psychotherapist and former caseworker, I understand what it's like to carry heavy stories. My goal is to offer a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported. We feel stress when life demands outstrip our ability to perform. It is a confusing emotion: a blend of apprehension, sadness, frustration and decreased motivation despite clear awareness of the importance of the issues at stake. Unfortunately we cannot afford avoidance -- it's like driving with eyes closed. Things are bound to get much worse if do that. But we can learn to distinguish between the initial response of stress (unavoidable pain) and stressing about stress (secondary emotion / useless pain). We can examine the assumptions that keep rumination, worry, resentment, vigilance and all the other such processes in place leaving us no room for rest. We can learn to compartmentalize by understanding the difference between the time for problem solving, the time for implementing our solutions and the time to simply rest and appreciate the calmer aspects of our lives. We learn to think of all our outstanding obligations as books on the shelf that we open as needed as opposed to balls in the air that will drop on our head the moment we take a little break. The techniques that I have described here are all rooted in cognitive behaviour therapy, especially stress inoculation training and metacognitive approaches that help us deal with cognitive attentional syndrome (the main culprit behind our inability to stop overthinking). Eventually we get to open our eyes, clean the windshield and manage traffic issues - problems - as they come.
