It's easy to fall into a difficult pattern with food. If you find yourself feeling like you need to constantly control what you eat and experience guilt when you don't adhere to strict food rules, this could be a sign of an eating disorder. Eating disorders are complicated issues that can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. While they can manifest in different ways, common symptoms include a strong focus on food and body image, an intense fear of gaining weight, a distorted perception of one's body (body dysmorphia), excessive exercise, purging behaviors, and episodes of binging.
Often, these conditions develop gradually. What might start as a simple desire in high school to lose a bit of weight or become healthier can slowly take over your life. You might feel stuck in a cycle of constantly thinking about what you eat and how you look. Eating disorders often lead to significant feelings of shame and guilt, especially when you believe you've eaten too much or the "wrong" foods. This can create a negative loop of overeating followed by intense dieting or exercise as an attempt to compensate for breaking self-imposed food rules.
Furthermore, research indicates a connection between negative body image and the development of eating disorders. Over time, concerns about your appearance can lead to attempts to control it through various means. You might try numerous diets, increase your exercise, or focus intensely on "healthy" eating. This could involve eliminating entire food groups, fasting, and/or exercising excessively in an effort to manage your shape and weight. These patterns can be emotionally draining, leaving you feeling frustrated and unsure of how to escape the constant preoccupation with food and weight.
If you are questioning whether you might have an eating disorder or are concerned about someone you know, please don't hesitate to seek support. At Laird Counselling, we have experience helping individuals heal their relationship with food and their bodies, enabling them to lead more balanced and fulfilling lives. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to learn more about how we can help.

Shannon Wylie
Registered Social Worker, MSW, RSW
I am currently accepting new clients. No waitlist! Evening sessions available for in-person or online sessions.
Having worked as a Registered Social Worker for over 12 years, I have established an approach to working with clients that leaves them feeling heard and supported. For those struggling with eating disorders, my eight month training with Toronto General Hospital's Eating Disorder Day Program provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills for supporting clients struggling with anorexia, bulimia and those who are wanting to improve their relationship with food.
We will explore areas such as self-esteem, healthy coping mechanisms, exploring underlying thoughts, feelings and experiences that might be perpetuating your struggle, addressing eating disorder symptoms such as restricting, compensating and body checking and work towards building a healthier relationship with your body.
During our sessions I create a space where you can safely and effectively work towards your wellness goals and make positive changes in your life. This may involve talking things through, processing and making sense of difficult experiences, addressing unhelpful thought or behaviour patterns, or establishing more effective coping mechanisms.
Please feel free to explore my website for more information or to book a free 20 minute consultation.
I would love to hear from you!

Eating disorders affect more than food or body image; they often speak to deeper pain, control, anxiety or trauma. In therapy, we work gently and collaboratively to rebuild trust with your body, repair your relationship with food and uncover what the disorder has been trying to communicate. Recovery is possible, even if it does not feel that way right now.
