Seattle, Washington therapist: Ryan Shannon, counselor/therapist
PTSD/Trauma

Ryan Shannon

Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA, MA, MS
Trauma can continue affecting you long after the danger has passed. You may experience intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, emotional numbness, shame, irritability, difficulty trusting others, or a constant sense that something bad is about to happen. Past experiences may also influence your relationships, self-worth, and the way you respond to conflict or vulnerability. My approach is both insight-oriented and structured. Drawing from Adlerian and psychodynamic therapy, we may explore how traumatic experiences shaped the beliefs you developed about yourself, other people, and the world. Understanding these connections can help you recognize when old survival responses are still influencing your present life. I use evidence-based approaches including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, or EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, or CPT, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. EMDR may help reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories. CPT and CBT can help you identify and challenge beliefs related to guilt, blame, safety, trust, control, and self-worth. We may also use mindfulness, grounding, and emotional regulation strategies to help you manage distress and remain connected to the present. Treatment is paced carefully, and you will not be expected to discuss painful experiences in more detail than you are ready to tolerate. My goal is not to erase what happened. It is to help the past feel less present, reduce the power traumatic experiences have over your choices, and help you regain a greater sense of safety, connection, and control.
