Bhavna Lalwani (She/Her)

Registered Psychotherapist, MA Counselling, RP
 therapist: Bhavna Lalwani,
Online in India, Ontario (Online Only)
My journey into this field is deeply personal. Having lived with anxiety, navigated grief, and taken on caregiving responsibilities early in life, I became committed to understanding mental health not only intellectually but in ways that could support genuine coping and healing. I understand what it can feel like to be stuck, lost, or caught in what seems like an endless loop of discouragement and emotional fatigue. These experiences have shaped the empathy and perspective I bring to my work. Through my work with individuals from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds, I have come to believe that human resilience is universal. Even in the most difficult circumstances, people find ways to endure and move forward. As a therapist, my goal is to support you in rediscovering your inner strength—helping you find clarity, reconnect with yourself, and rebuild a sense of hope and trust in your path forward.

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Adlerian Therapy Focuses on understanding a person’s sense of belonging and purpose. It helps people overcome feelings of inferiority and create healthier relationships.
  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Biopsychosocial Therapy Takes into account biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding mental health. It looks at the whole person, not just symptoms.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) An evidence-based treatment for PTSD that teaches clients to reframe unhelpful thoughts about trauma. It helps reduce guilt, shame, and fear.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Feminist Therapy Addresses how gender roles, power, and social inequality affect mental health. It empowers clients to challenge limiting beliefs and systems.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) Helps clients challenge and replace irrational beliefs. It is an action-oriented approach for lasting change.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I support individuals navigating life’s challenges through a culturally responsive, trauma-informed approach, using Narrative Therapy, Complex Trauma work, and Cognitive Therapies to foster growth, resilience, and positive change.

My approach is integrative and client-centered, guided by frameworks such as Narrative Therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for Complex Trauma, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Feminist Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Strategies, and anti-oppressive, culturally sensitive practices. I work with individuals facing long-term and complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, grief, depression, emotional dysregulation, self-harm, ADHD, chronic pain, relational and childhood trauma, intimate partner violence, sexual abuse, human trafficking, parenting stress, and workplace mental health challenges. I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling (MA) from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India (2011) and am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), with extensive training in Narrative Therapy. My professional experience spans private practice, community agencies, hospitals, and educational settings in both Mumbai, India, and Ontario, Canada, with a focus on supporting women, BIPOC clients, and those impacted by systemic and relational trauma. I believe therapy is not about pathologizing you—it’s about understanding the survival strategies you’ve developed, honoring your resilience, and gently rewriting the stories that no longer serve you. My goal is to co-create a space where you feel seen, grounded, and empowered to move forward with clarity and self-trust. I offer individual therapy for adults and seniors, and beginning therapy can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone. If you’re feeling stuck, anxious, or unsure of where to start, I invite you to book a free 15-minute consultation through Jane.
