At Root & Rise, CBT is woven into our work as a foundational, evidence-based tool—not a one-size-fits-all formula. Our clinicians use CBT to help clients gain clarity around the thought patterns and behaviors that fuel anxiety and depression, while also integrating it with deeper, insight-oriented and trauma-informed approaches. We use CBT in a flexible, personalized way: identifying patterns, practicing new skills, challenging distortions, and building healthier coping strategies that support real, sustainable change. Since I am not a licensed therapist, I'm not allowed to diagnose conditions such as Depression. This is a term that is often thrown around quite readily and clients often state they suffer from depression, whether or not they have been formally diagnosed by a therapist in the past. Generally, it is a rather broad diagnosis covering a wide range of behaviors. For hypnotists, many of these behaviors are simply a negative habit of mind that we can change, neutralizing many of the past traumas that have led to their problems. I have worked with many such clients, however. In many cases my clients have been in therapy for years, even decades, and while they understood the roots of their feelings, they got no relief. One of my earliest clients was a woman who suffered tremendous emotional abuse as a child and grew up with a crushing feeling of worthlessness. She became grossly overweight and worked at menial jobs her whole life, unable to form any successful and satisfying relationships. Through hypnosis, she was able to lose 170 pounds and after one session focused on her past trauma, she was so lightened of her lifelong burden of self loathing that she practically floated out of my office and she insisted on paying me double my fee. She has been free of her burdens now for 5 years and comes in once a year for a refresher session. I have had many such results in my practice.

Dr. Madelyn Satz

Psychologist, Ph.D.
Depression is a dark, crushing weight. When we’re lost in the darkness it’s difficult to find the light or even trust that it’s there. But it is. The darkness is scary for sure, and yet even depression is trying to help us in some way, like for example, trying to keep us safe. It doesn’t realize we don’t need protection in that way or to that degree. We will explore where and why these thoughts and feelings are stuck, and challenge, rework and update them to bring more light into your life.

Depression can make life feel muted - relationships grow distant, motivation fades, and the world loses color. My approach looks beyond symptoms to the emotional and relational patterns that keep you feeling stuck or alone. Together, we uncover how attachment, self-criticism, and unmet needs shape your experience of sadness and disconnection. Whether depression has followed loss, betrayal, or chronic stress, therapy offers a path back to clarity, steadiness, and genuine connection - with yourself and with those you love.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Depression

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
Many of the adults I work with are high‑functioning professionals and students, often in high‑responsibility or high‑pressure roles, who are not falling apart on the outside. They go to work, show up for others, and do what needs to be done. Inside, things may feel flat, heavy, or empty. What once mattered now feels distant. Getting through the day can take more effort than anyone around you realizes. Depression can look like sadness, but it can also look like numbness, irritability, withdrawal, or feeling disconnected from yourself and others. You might notice difficulty getting started even on things you care about, feeling tired all the time or both on edge and drained, pulling away from friends or activities, harsh self‑criticism or a sense of worthlessness, or thoughts that life will never really feel different. In our work together, we take your experience seriously without rushing to fix it. We look at how depression shows up in your body, thoughts, and relationships, and at the contexts that may be shaping it, such as trauma, identity stress, chronic pain or illness, caregiving, or high‑pressure work and school environments. I offer a stable, non‑pressuring space where you do not have to pretend you are okay. From there, we begin to notice what lightens things even slightly, what still matters to you, and what small shifts are possible at a pace that respects your nervous system and your life.

West Hollywood, California therapist: Dr. Ingrid Solano, psychologist
Depression

Dr. Ingrid Solano

Psychologist, PhD
I work with both adults and adolescents on an individual basis. Individual psychotherapy helps clients deal with particular issues, symptoms, and stressors. My goal is to provide a safe, non judgmental space for you to explore who you are, how you relate to others, and what supports you on your journey to become your best self. I lean into, listen, understand, and enhance authentic expression. Together we create a collaborative process of transformation. What that means and what that looks like is different for everyone... I offer evidence-based therapies from a curious, nonjudgmental philosophy. No matter where you have been, evidence-based therapies focus on changing the now. I strive to help my clients experience the world mindfully, and in accordance with their personal values. Through our work in cultivating an affirming, authentic, and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, I provide support while we collaboratively deconstruct what is causing distress in your life and preventing you from being your most effective and authentic self. Individual therapy facilitates insight and growth, becoming more effective at actualizing your values, and building more authentic relationships with yourself and with others. While there are many forms of therapy you can pursue, my expertise is in time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT), the Unified Protocol for emotional disorders, and third wave CBT such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness based interventions. (I do have experience in, and practice, an eclectic arrangement of other modalities as well-- when applicable or specifically requested.) We explore thoughts, beliefs, and understanding, while also prioritizing behavioral processes that focus on your contexts and the functions of how you relate to your internal experiences. CBT is designed to help individuals notice and shift their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to get relief from painful emotions such as anxiety and sadness. Third wave interventions also promote well-being through developing coping skills, personal values, and metacognition that complement traditional CBT interventions. I provide flexible, customizable approaches that look different with each patient. I empower my clients to discover their strength, clarity, creativity, autonomy, resilience, motivation, and confidence in meeting whatever happens next. I provide individualized tools to use in everyday decision-making that will help those changes last. With these modalities I treat individuals who are impacted by depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship distress, burnout, divorce, loss, uncertainty, stigma, and other life experiences, diagnoses, and stressors. We explore the sources, experiences, and beliefs that impact how you relate with the world and implement change in your life. You are the expert on you, but are you your most effective and content self?
