Palm Beach, Florida therapist: Ashley Mason, counselor/therapist
Anxiety

Ashley Mason

Counselor/Therapist, CMHC, LMHC
Anxiety can feel like a nonstop loop of second-guessing, overthinking, and worrying about how others see you. Many of my clients grew up with critical or unpredictable parents, and anxiety became their way of staying safe — always scanning, always preparing, never letting their guard down. In therapy, we slow things down and uncover where those fears began, so you can understand them differently and loosen their grip. Over time, you’ll learn to trust yourself more, feel steadier, and move through life with greater freedom and ease.

If anxiety has you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or constantly bracing for the next thing to go wrong, you're not alone—and you don’t have to keep pushing through it on your own. I specialize in working with high-achieving professionals and emerging adults whose minds are always “on,” often juggling high expectations, what-ifs, and the pressure to keep it all together. Many of my clients have already tried everything they know—podcasts, productivity hacks, deep breaths in the car—and still feel like they’re falling short. Whether anxiety shows up as overthinking, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or burnout, we can make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface and find a new way forward. At The Momentum Practice, I offer therapy that is practical, compassionate, and centered on what matters most to you. I believe in creating spaces where you don’t have to explain your existence—just your goals. A space where you can show up exactly as you are, take a deep breath, and exhale. With over 15 years of experience, I help clients slow the mental spin, challenge unhelpful patterns, and reconnect with clarity and confidence. Therapy with me is about progress, not perfection— and about finding relief that actually lasts. My job is to help you feel understood and equipped. If you’re ready to feel more like yourself again, in control, and less like you're running on empty, I’m here—and I speak fluent overthinking.Contact me for a free 15 minute consultation!

Los Angeles, California therapist: Jayson L. Mystkowski, psychologist
Anxiety

Jayson L. Mystkowski

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP
While Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), clinicians do see some “return of fear,” or partial relapse, in some patients due to a variety of factors. Over the past two decades, treatment researchers, with whom Dr. Jayson Mystkowski had the pleasure of working with at UCLA for over 10 years, have studied “return of fear” and discovered some key variables that may optimize the effects of learning during CBT for anxiety disorders (Craske et al., 2008). First, evidence suggests that focusing on tolerating fear versus eliminating fear yields better clinical outcomes in the long term. Namely, teaching clients that fear and anxiety are normal feelings, rather than attempting to “down-regulate” such feelings all the time, is more realistic and seems to engender “hardier” clients. Second, helping clients to generate an expectancy that “scary things will not happen,” is very powerful. To do this, it is important for clinicians to create more complex exposure exercises (i.e., tasks in which a client confronts a stimulus of which they are afraid), using multiple feared stimuli instead of one at a time. Then, the lack of a feared outcome becomes particularly surprising and memorable for a client and fear reduction is more potent. Third, increasing the accessibility and retrievability of non-fear memories learned during treatment are powerful factors in mitigating against a return of fear. Craske and colleagues demonstrated that exposure to variations of a feared stimulus, using a random schedule across multiple contexts or situations, is more effective than exposure to the same stimulus, on a predictable schedule, in an unchanging environment. The former paradigm, it is argued, creates stronger non-fear memories that are easier for a client to access when subsequently confronting feared objects or situations outside of the therapy context, than the later scenario. In sum, clinicians have long been aware that some fear or anxiety returns following very successful CBT treatment. As mentioned above, there are some clear, empirically supported ways to modify the therapy we provide to further help clients generalize the gains made in therapy sessions to the real world.

Wauwatosa, Wisconsin therapist: Johanna Wood, Leap Counseling and Consultation, psychologist
Anxiety

Johanna Wood, Leap Counseling and Consultation

Psychologist, PhD, LP
I specialize in exposure-based therapies for anxiety disorders. My clients typically have tried therapy before, but have not seen much improvement. They continue living in fear, anxiety, and guilt, as their lives continue getting smaller and smaller. Coping skills are great, but they can only get you so far. The good news is, there are science-backed treatments for anxiety that actually work. If you're ready to stop coping and start living, take a leap of faith and reach out. My style is structured and balances use of the latest science with compassion and understanding. My goal is to make you feel heard, and feel challenged. I serve adults with primary anxiety and OCD, and I also address co-occurring depression, insomnia, body-focused repetitive behaviors, and trauma, using cognitive-behavioral therapies. You don't have to keep suffering this way.
