Vancouver, Washington therapist: Celeste Tomasulo, marriage and family therapist
Chronic Pain

Celeste Tomasulo

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
I understand firsthand how difficult and isolating living with a chronic illness can be. Family members and friends try their best to be supportive, but ultimately can’t understand what we're experiencing. Doctors can be dismissive and are often as much of a source of frustration as our symptoms. Chronic illness isn’t just about physical symptoms that impact our quality of life, but also the emotional overwhelm of adjusting to new limitations. I provide a safe space to help those struggling with chronic illness process these overwhelming emotions and cope with the loss of a pre-diagnosis life in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of a post-diagnosis identity. Together, we explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that impact symptom development and work towards an improved quality of life.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Seattle, Washington therapist: Sarah Wolfer, licensed clinical social worker
Chronic Pain

Sarah Wolfer

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LICSW
Chronic pain and illness don't just live in the body, they live in the nervous system, in the identity shifts that come with a changed body, in the grief of losing the life you thought you'd have. And they're often made harder by how invisible or dismissed that experience can feel. I'm Sarah, and I work with people navigating chronic pain and illness using a body-informed approach (Somatic EMDR therapy) to help the nervous system release what it's been bracing against, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for clients where depression, grief, or emotional exhaustion have become part of the picture too. For my queer, neurodivergent, and non-monogamous clients, chronic illness also intersects with identity in ways that deserve care and nuance. You deserve a therapist who understands all of it. Pain is so much more than a number on a Pain Scale. Your activity, your relationships, your thoughts, and your mood can all affect your experience of pain. Together we are going to examine all of the different things that make your pain worse. We will discover how you're daily activities and your beliefs around pain can fuel the cycle of pain. We will then develop tools to interrupt that cycle and do more with less pain. Please feel free to reach out to me to learn more about my approach to treating chronic pain.
