Falls Church, Virginia therapist: Carolyn Murphy, Ph.D., psychologist
PTSD/Trauma

Carolyn Murphy, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Counseling Psychology
I have many years of experience helping clients who have experienced physical, emotional, and/or sexual trauma, particularly in their childhood. My approach to therapy is interactive and supportive, with an overall goal of increasing self-awareness and coping skills to help promote the kind of changes that you would like to see. I believe that the quality of the therapist/client relationship is paramount to our work together, and because of this I highly encourage you to choose a therapist that feels like a "good fit" for you. I always start with an initial consultation appointment where I can learn more about your background and reasons for seeking therapy, answer any questions you may have, and then plan together from there. Starting therapy can feel daunting or overwhelming for many people, so it is important that we work at a pace that feels comfortable to you.

Landenberg, Pennsylvania therapist: Maria T. Alonso, Ph.D., psychologist
PTSD/Trauma

Maria T. Alonso, Ph.D.

Psychologist
As a psychologist working with trauma, I utilize evidence-based treatments to help clients process and heal from their experiences. I often use Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to assist clients in addressing and reframing the negative thought patterns and emotional responses associated with their trauma. This approach helps them develop coping strategies and gradually face and work through their traumatic memories. Additionally, I incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to facilitate the processing of distressing memories and reduce their emotional charge. My approach is empathetic and client-centered, ensuring that each individual feels supported and empowered throughout their recovery journey. By applying these evidence-based treatments, I aim to help clients regain a sense of safety and control, ultimately guiding them towards healing and resilience.

Lawrence, Kansas therapist: Shannon Gorres, life coach
PTSD/Trauma

Shannon Gorres

Life Coach, MDiv, MA
My understanding of trauma has shifted along with international research on why some events create lasting challenging effects for some people but not for others. Our collective awareness has gone from thinking, “What's wrong with you?” to asking, “What happened to you?” and now focusing on, “Who was there for you?” A simple retelling of a traumatic experience does not always deeply heal the one who suffers. While it can feel good to be truly heard, especially for those who have never told it before and need real empathy, repeatedly telling the story does not often change the subconscious beliefs implanted during the trauma or the nervous system’s reactivity. Instead, we build a new relationship with a traumatic experience by re-approaching the memory and inviting a shift. Often the shift is around “Who could have been there for you.” While in factual reality, no one may have stopped the trauma, we can access another perspective that enables our bodies, hearts, and minds to feel supported. We can do this many ways: through role play, through calling in ancestors or pop stars or our highest selves, or by letting our wise adult-self take over the situation. Or we may use drawing materials or nature to discover a new part of the experience we didn’t realize before. I've taken many trainings in the origins and effects of trauma and PTSD, and I find working with the nervous system and imaginal realm (creative liminal space) highly effective. I'm not a licensed mental health therapist; I'm a spiritual life coach, so my work is integrative. I offer: calm spaciousness & empathy as you talk, embodied processing options (drawing, clay work, self soothing), and inner parts work (mediated inner dialogue or a “committee of voices,” similar to Soulwork or Internal Family Systems). Then we make a plan to implement the new shift into everyday life.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania therapist: Philadelphia Couples Therapy, psychologist
PTSD/Trauma

Philadelphia Couples Therapy

Psychologist, PsyD
Trauma manifests in a myriad of ways in our minds and bodies. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can result from experiencing or witnessing a life threatening event or significant loss, whereas complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) may result from chronic abuse, neglect or other forms of mistreatment that happened repeatedly over a period of time. These experiences of intense fear make an imprint on the nervous system, impacting our physical and emotional responses to our partners, children, families, friends, and colleagues. Often our inclination is to avoid, ignore or push through these traumas in an effort to minimize the associated pain. However these efforts are futile as unresolved traumas create invisible barriers that hinder the development of a strong sense of self and healthy relationships. In romantic relationships, trauma can disrupt our ability to trust, to feel safe emotionally and physically, and can interfere with the enjoyment of sex and intimacy. These impacts of trauma may ebb and flow over time, intensifying during big life transitions and resurfacing as we age. Whether you are seeking individual or couples therapy, the therapists at PCT create a trauma-informed space to process trauma, understand its impacts on your relationships and build coping skills to move forward. We are patient and emphasize building a trusting relationship together. Therapists at PCT understand that healing from trauma takes time and progress may not always be linear, but that this work leads to healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self-worth.
