Scheduling at AYC is easy - schedule an intake as soon as next week. Finding the courage to be true to yourself despite the challenges you have to overcome is the ultimate goal of therapy. I believe one of the greatest grievances is living an inauthentic life with who you are. Regardless of what you’ve been through, if something is stopping you from living your truth - if fear prevents you from engaging in life the way you want or you are attempting to live up to some societal or personal expectation so far out of reach it hurts - If something is preventing you from living your fullest life, you can make a difference! I want to help you reach your fullest potential according to your personal truth, values and beliefs. If we embark on this journey together, you will be the driver. I will simply help you see the different paths to reaching your end goal. In the end, you must be true to yourself in choosing the path you wish to take - or none at all. Finding your truth sometimes means making a decision about whether or not to live your full truth. We can work together to help you explore your options to make the right choice for You. Coral Gables, Florida therapist: Dr Todd Giardina, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dr Todd Giardina

Psychologist, PhD, Counseling Psychology
I trained in chronic pain management in many hospitals during my PhD program and beyond. I have since worked in hospitals and clinics for many years before transitioning into private practice. I understand much of the medical lingo and the confusing messaging one can receive from MDs - I can help put you at ease while also teaching you to advocate for yourself around your illness. The biggest component with chronic pain, of course, is acknowledging the interplay between mental and physical pain - "it's all in your head" is a dismissive statement some may hear, but also we work from the truth that pain is somewhat in your head, and that is how a psychologist can help you learn to manage physical pain.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with people whose lives have been shaped by their bodies in ways they did not choose. This may include serious or long‑term illness, chronic pain, complex diagnoses or diagnostic uncertainty, and the lingering impact of medical procedures and hospitalizations. For some, there is also medical trauma or other trauma woven in. For others, the ongoing symptoms themselves are what feel overwhelming. Many of the adults, teens, and children I see look like they are managing from the outside. They keep up with school, work, or family responsibilities and often minimize what they are going through. Inside, there may be fear, grief, anger, exhaustion, or a sense of watching life move on without them. I often work with people who are trying to navigate medical, school, or workplace systems that feel unsupportive, confusing, or exhausting, and to live a life that makes sense when very few people seem to understand what it is really like. My work is not general support for illness. I focus on how pain, illness, and medical experiences live in the nervous system and shape mood, relationships, daily life, and sense of self. We make space for the very real impact of ongoing pain or fatigue, adjusting to new diagnoses or changes in functioning, repeated medical procedures or hospital stays, encounters with dismissive or disbelieving providers, and the losses and changes that come with a life that is different from what was expected. Together, we work with your body’s responses to what has happened, the stress of navigating care and systems, and the question of how to move forward in a way that feels possible for you. Supporting people whose lives have been shaped by illness and pain is central to my practice, and I have deep respect for how much you carry that others often cannot see.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Additionally, I support clients in navigating the impact of chronic pain on relationships, work, and daily functioning, while promoting self-care practices and advocating for holistic healthcare approaches.
