Anger is a normal emotion we all have. But if you find yourself getting too easily triggered or expressing it in a harmful way, then it's a problem that probably affects your overall quality of life and health. I approach anger management in a non-judgmental way and teach you how to challenge the thoughts that are upsetting you and teach you how to calm your body. Without these two key skills, managing emotions is challenging.

I understand anger, the effect it has on one’s life, and how it affects the people around you. When clients see me as a peaceful guy, they’re seeing the result of a lot of healing work (with more to do). I’ve had considerable success helping clients with anger problems, perhaps because I believe anger management is secondary to healing. I believe most people who are angry are like volcanos. Even though the anger that shows on the surface in the present is hot enough to burn the client and everyone around him or her, there’s even more heat and energy “under ground” – in the past. So I usually focus on healing the past first – without having to spend a lot of time talking about it. Once that unresolved pain and anger is mostly dissolved, clients don’t get triggered as easily or as forcefully. The next focus is on reducing everyday frustrations. When the little things don't bug you as much, you'll be cooler under pressure and when bigger problems come up. , and have enough presence of mind to use anger management tools instead of losing control. Note: I don’t do court-mandated anger management. If you live in Fairfax County, call my colleague Gary Niki at 202-241-0944.

Alison Huang - Grow Your Mind Psychotherapy

Counselor/Therapist, LCPC
Anger is a strong emotion and it usually gets triggered when we feel like we are being attacked. Hence, we tend to have a "fight or flight" response. When we react to anger too quickly, we may do something impulsively as we didn't think in advance. Hence, we may express anger inappropriately which can affect our relationship to people. I am specialized in helping people with anger issues. I use CBT and mindfulness to help clients identify anger-provoking triggers and teach them techniques to descale the tension.

I work with individuals to clarify recurring patterns, reduce distress, and cultivate a more contented life—including when anger is part of the picture. Anger is a difficult emotion to experience, often complex and conflicting. My goal in helping clients that are wanting to address their anger, involves a comprehensive approach. Anger serves a function and our response can be changed by becoming aware of our beliefs about anger. Understanding how are body responds to threats internal or external is also important. Beyond an awareness, I help clients to identify and change cognitive beliefs and other aspects of their life, to reduce or eliminate unhelpful behaviors that they utilized in the past.
