Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Codependency

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
I have worked with codependents for many years. John Bradshaw, a popular author and leader in this field, referred to me as a “Master Therapist.” The concept of Codependency, though not included in the Diagnostic Manual, points to relationships that have become dysfunctional with one person so enmeshed in being the Caregiver (the Giver) that they enable the other (the Taker) to constantly receive without giving support and care in return. This dynamic can occur in any kind of relationship, not just romantic. Although the role of the Giver arises out of loving kindness, there is an element of attachment to being the “Rescuer” that enables the Taker to continue their dysfunctional behaviors (e.g. substance abuse, gambling, sex addiction, abusiveness, etc.) as the Giver inadvertently shields them from the results of their dysfunctional behaviors. If this dynamic is not interrupted, the Giver eventually becomes exhausted, frustrated and burned out, in need of the support, healing, and self-awareness provided through therapy. I offer free zoom seminars, which give you a taste of how I can help with relationship issues. Please feel free to call for a consultation: 301-229-8000.

In sessions, I utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to address codependency by helping clients develop healthier boundaries, improve emotional regulation, and enhance interpersonal effectiveness. Through individual and group therapy sessions, I incorporate specific DBT skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, and assertiveness training to empower clients to break free from codependent patterns. By fostering self-awareness and teaching adaptive coping strategies, I support clients in creating more balanced and fulfilling relationships while reducing reliance on dysfunctional dynamics.

Patients with this disorder are getting resilient in no time. I get their habit disorder treated by my Dicit hyptherapy and clinical hypnosis. How Hypnotherapy Treats Codependency: Hypnotherapy works to change underlying, often subconscious, beliefs such as "I am only valuable if I am helping others" or "I must fix my partner's problems".Setting Boundaries: It helps individuals establish healthy emotional boundaries and gain the confidence to say "no" without guilt. Addressing Root Causes: By relaxing the mind, therapists can access memories or traumas that triggered the codependent behavior to foster emotional healing. Building Self-Esteem: Hypnotherapy helps individuals reconnect with their own needs, interests, and identity outside of the relationship.

Mikela Hallmark

Therapist, MS, LPC, LMHC
Codependency isn’t just about “losing yourself in a relationship.” It’s a survival strategy — often born from childhood environments where attunement, safety, or emotional permission were inconsistent or absent. In our work together, we gently unravel these patterns, not by labeling you as broken, but by honoring the intelligence of the parts that learned to over-function, over-give, and under-receive. I help clients build internal boundaries before external ones — learning to recognize where they end and others begin. Together, we practice new relational templates rooted in self-trust, emotional honesty, and reciprocity. This isn’t about becoming “independent” in a vacuum. It’s about reclaiming yourself without losing connection — perhaps for the first time.

You might be the one everyone leans on—always available, endlessly supportive, and quick to smooth things over. But underneath that strength, there’s a quiet exhaustion. Maybe you’ve spent so long tending to others that you’ve lost touch with your own voice. You may struggle to set boundaries, prioritize your own needs, or feel okay when someone else is upset. Maybe you define your worth through how much you give or help, but deep down, you’re craving space to just be… without performing, fixing, or proving. At The Momentum Practice, I help clients untangle patterns of codependency that often start early—growing up in families where your worth was tied to being helpful, agreeable, or emotionally attuned to others. These patterns can show up in adult life in all kinds of relationships: romantic partnerships, friendships, caregiving roles, family systems, and even the workplace, where over-functioning often gets mistaken for excellence. You might find yourself constantly people-pleasing, second-guessing your instincts, or feeling panicked at the thought of being left behind. They can be especially layered for LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent folks who’ve had to mask parts of themselves to stay safe, loved, or accepted. We’ll explore how these ways of relating helped you survive—and how they might be keeping you stuck now. Together, we’ll work on building boundaries that feel empowering (not selfish), tuning into your own needs and desires, and letting go of the belief that your value comes from how much you give. We’ll also look at how systemic pressures may have reinforced these patterns over time. Our work might include unlearning perfectionism, quieting the inner critic, and cultivating self-trust that isn’t tied to how much you do for others. With over 15 years of experience, I offer a compassionate space to reconnect with your own voice and needs. You don’t have to keep disappearing in your relationships. Whether we’re working one-on-one or navigating these dynamics in couples therapy, you’ll have a space to explore what healthier, more mutual connection can look like. If you're ready to show up more fully for yourself and build connections that don’t come at the cost of your own well-being, I’d be honored to journey alongside you. Hockessin, Delaware therapist: Dr. Berkeley Antonioli, licensed clinical social worker
Codependency

Dr. Berkeley Antonioli

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, PhD, LCSW, LCSW-C, MEd
The majority of my training and clinical work has been focused on helping adults recover from early traumatic experiences. Often, the traumas my clients are working through is rooted in early relational and/or sexual experiences that leave a lasting impact on their formative developmental years and beyond. I have found that these early experiences often impact how clients have learned to operate and survive in relationships. Many have learned to defer to others, feeling like a burden if they consider and try to communicate their needs or limits, which is the foundation of codependency. These folks have learned to betray themselves in order to preserve their attachments, often leading to resentment, burnout, anxiety and depression.

Codependency is a behavioral condition in a relationship where one person enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. Among the core characteristics of codependency is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and a sense of identity. In our work together, we will explore/examine the issues related to the behavior and improve the reasoning behind co-dependency.

Codependency is a learned pattern of interacting. We can unlearn these patterns, too. First we are going to identify the needs and learn more accurate self talk around self-esteem and self-worth. We will talk about triggers that might cause you to fall back into old patterns and ways to act with love, but not entangled in someone else's distress.
