Psychologist, PsyD, LP
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a very debilitating set of symptoms and is something for which I use a therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ExRP or ERP). This therapy is widely considered to be the most effective treatment for OCD available. I will teach you how to approach situations that create obsessive thinking and emotional distress and how to simultaneously resist acting on urges to engage in your compulsive behavior. The result is the ability to be in these situations with significantly less distress and without overwhelming compulsive urges. People with OCD are typically amazed at what they can achieve through this therapy.

One could say that we all need a bit of Obsessive Compulsiveness to keep our homes and lives organized, but too much of it can result in dysfunctional behaviors like repeatedly checking the stove to see if it was left on, obsessive hand-washing irritating one's skin, etc. The movie “As Good As It Gets” is an example of a man whose total existence is negatively impacted by extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Check out my monthly, free, zoom seminars. Please feel free to call for further information and/or a consultation: 301-229-8000.

At Waves of Wisdom Therapy, treatment for OCD is about learning how to live meaningfully with the presence of obsessional doubts. We will learn how to make room for the full range of human experience without being pulled under the current of the OCD cycle. All of the work we do is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT reminds us that pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. We can’t control our thoughts or emotions, but we can choose how we respond to them, and in doing so, move toward a life guided by purpose, presence, and self-compassion. From this foundation, we integrate two powerful, evidence-based methods: Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in order to help you understand and change the patterns that keep OCD alive.

OCD can be mild to debilitating, and is often missed and treated as anxiety. I've found that OCD and Health Anxiety, as well as Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs, ie. skin picking, hair pulling/tweezing, nail/cuticle biting) can sometimes co-exist together. I'm trained in treating OCD through two of the primary evidence based OCD treatment modalities -Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP/ExRP). I-CBT is a newer evidence based treatment for OCD that focuses on gaining certainty versus pushing yourself into uncertainty, and is thought to be a gentler approach. There are many types of OCD and the thought-based "invisible" types are the most often missed forms of OCD, often called the "Pure O subtype" meaning that the obsessions/thoughts are there, but that the compulsions are mental and not outwardly visible, as we've come to expect from what we see about OCD in the media/social media. There are many forms of OCD, including Postpartum OCD, Relational (romantic as well as platonic) OCD, Harm OCD, Perfectionism/Just Right OCD, Contamination OCD, Scrupulosity or Religious OCD, Checking OCD, Obsessional OCD, Sexual Orientation OCD, Pedophilia OCD, and Superstitious OCD, among others. I'm trained in treating BFRBs using multiple modalities including, Habit Reversal Training, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Comprehensive Model for the Behavioral Treatment of BFRB and DBT, which help to reduce the symptoms of BFRBs.

Living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can feel exhausting, with intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that seem impossible to quiet, and repetitive behaviors or rituals that feel necessary just to get through the day. OCD is not about being “overly neat”—it’s about anxiety, uncertainty, and the need for relief from distressing thoughts. In therapy, I provide evidence-based support (including ERP, CBT, and mindfulness strategies) in a safe, non-judgmental space. Together, we’ll work to reduce the power of obsessions, ease compulsions, and build healthier coping strategies so you can feel more in control and free to live your life with greater balance and peace.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) counseling is a specially designed to help individuals who are struggling with the often debilitating symptoms of OCD. This mental health disorder is characterized by unwanted and intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions). Our counseling services focus on providing varied approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), to reduce the occurrence and impact of OCD symptoms, thereby improving daily functioning and quality of life. Evidence-Based Treatment for OCD * Tailored CBT Techniques: We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients identify and challenge the distorted thinking patterns that fuel their obsessions and compulsions. * Exposure and Response Prevention: ERP involves gradually exposing clients to their feared objects or ideas (exposures) and teaching them to resist the urge to carry out their usual compulsive acts (response prevention). * Skills Training: Clients are trained in stress management and relaxation techniques to help manage the anxiety that often accompanies OCD. * Mindfulness and Acceptance: Incorporating elements of mindfulness helps clients learn to accept their obsessive thoughts without acting on them compulsively. * Family Involvement: We provide support and education for families of individuals with OCD so that they can better understand the disorder and offer the right kind of support to their loved ones. Goals of OCD Counseling Our OCD counseling services strive to: * Reduce OCD Symptoms: Aim to significantly decrease the frequency and severity of obsessions and compulsions. * Increase Functionality: Help clients regain control over their lives and engage more fully with work, school, and social activities. * Enhance Coping Skills: Equip individuals with tools and strategies to manage OCD symptoms independently and effectively. * Improve Quality of Life: Focus on improving overall well-being, satisfaction, and happiness in life beyond OCD symptoms. * Prevent Relapse: Provide clients with the knowledge and skills to maintain their progress and prevent the recurrence of severe OCD symptoms. OCD counseling is a path toward reclaiming a sense of normalcy and freedom from the cycles of obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Our commitment lies in delivering compassionate and competent care tailored to each individual’s experience. I use exposure therapy to help clients with OCD gradually face feared thoughts, situations, or sensations while learning to resist compulsive responses. The process is collaborative and carefully paced, helping clients build tolerance for uncertainty and reduce the power OCD has over daily life. Over time, exposure therapy supports lasting relief by teaching the brain that anxiety can be experienced without giving in to compulsions.

Being restricted by intense worries about oneself and others can lead people into rigid routines that function to alleviate the intensity of their inner tensions, if only for a short time. People who are unable to break out from these patterns can become self-critical and lose a sense of hope that can be debilitating. It is important to remind ourselves in these instances that things can improve and that sometimes it may only take the effort to reach out for help.

I use evidence-based approaches, including Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT), to help you break free from these patterns and regain control of your life. In therapy, you’ll learn to respond differently to intrusive thoughts, reduce compulsions, and build resilience so anxiety doesn’t dictate your every move.

Is OCD putting a strain on your relationship? You’re not alone. Think of OCD as a relentless bully, constantly dictating how you should act—or else. But this bully doesn’t just target you; it infiltrates your relationship, too. Your partner may feel pressured to follow certain behaviors dictated by OCD, and over time, that pressure can turn into frustration or resentment. When your partner pushes back, it might feel like hostility toward you. Now, you’re not only struggling with intrusive thoughts and anxiety but also the pain of feeling unsupported or blamed in your relationship. If this is your experience, working with a couple therapist that fully understands the nature of OCD is essential. Couple therapy can help you and your partner to develop a shared understanding of how to best respond when OCD shows up, so that you are united in taking a stand against this bully, rather than letting it come between you.
